Without local funds in place, it appeared earlier this year that the annual Kane Summer School program could be shelved.
The district, however, now is expecting federal funds to cover the Summer School cost, estimated at $42,000.
Acting at its meeting Wednesday at the Kane Middle School auditorium, the school board voted 8-0 to approve a five-week Summer School program-- pending receipt of the federal funds.
More than 70 Kane school children have reasons to smile today after undergoing dental checkups earlier this week.
The exams for children in kindergarten through eighth grade were given during the school day as part of the Mobile Dentist program.
Dr. Janice McVay, a Pittsburgh dentist, performed the dental exams in the nurse’s office for the Kane Elementary School and Kane Middle School. Assisting were dental hygienists Kelly Bidwell of Union City and Brenda Bosworth of Port Allegany.

Wetmore Township will see a decrease in the amount of revenue it receives this year from its share of timber sales in the Allegheny National Forest (ANF).
According to a report from the U.S. Forest Service, the township's allocation will be $94,298.44 this year. The figure is a decrease of $8,665.88 from the previous allocation of $102,9964.32.
The Wetmore Township Supervisors Steve Dyne, Bill Ryding and Elaine Bodistow received notice of the timber revenue Tuesday at a meeting at the township building on Spring Street in East Kane.
A nine-week program is designed to help overweight Kane children learn how to lead healthier lives.
Called "KidShape," the program begins Thursday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Kane Middle School cafeteria and gymnasium.
A total of 16 children in kindergarten through eighth grade have registered for the nationally recognized family-based weight management program. A parent or guardian must accompany their children to each session.
SMETHPORT – The McKean County Board of Commissioners went on record Tuesday in favor of state legislation to reform the "prevailing wage" act.
Commissioners Joe DeMott, Al Pingie and Cliff Lane endorsed legislation that boosts the "threshold" for "prevailing wage" projects from $25,000 to $185,000.
Under the current law adopted in 1961, contractors bidding on municipal projects must agree to pay "prevailing wages" to their workers if the project cost is $25,000 or more.

MT. JEWETT – The Mt. Jewett Borough Council voted 6-0 Monday to reject a request from Kane Community Hospital for property tax relief for its new medical center now under construction on West Main Street.
Council President Chuck Paar joined with Councilmen Chip Lannen, Don Martyna, Wil Antrim, John Keesee and Brett Morgan to shoot down the request. Councilwoman Linda Berry did not attend the meeting due to a leg injury, it was noted.

More than 200 jammed into hallways and classrooms Saturday for an auction at the former Chestnut Street Elementary School in Kane.
The Kane Area School District held the auction to dispose of surplus equipment and to prepare the building for sale to Kane Manufacturing.
“It was a larger turnout than we expected,” John Rook said in commenting on the size of the auction crowd. Rook is the facilities director for the school district.
Based on preliminary figures, it appears the school district will take in more than $9,200 as its share of the auction proceeds.

MT. JEWETT – Where there's a need, there's a way to fill it.
That's the philosophy of the Bradford Regional Medical Center (BRMC), which held a ceremony Friday to mark the opening the new Mt. Jewett Health Center on West Main Street.
Timothy J. Finan, president and chief executive officer of BRMC and the Upper Allegheny Health System, said the construction of the Mt. Jewett facility is "a response to enhance access to patients we serve."
"We're responding to a need," he said.

Proposed improvements at Evergreen Park in Kane were discussed Thursday evening at a community meeting at the Kane Community Center on Fraley Street.
About a dozen residents attended the 75-minute meeting. Dick Bly, chairman of the "Friends of Evergreen Park" group, presided.
Kane Borough Council President Howard Kane and Councilmen Harold Hallberg and Dennis Drost represented the borough at the forum.
"I thought it was a good meeting," Bly said. "We want to have a good working relationship with council."
SMETHPORT – The McKean County Salary Board has agreed to create three new positions.
The positions include:
*Security officer at the new county Domestic Relations Office building on Route 6 adjacent to the county jail.
The position calls for a 37.5-hour work week at the rate of $15 per hour, effective Jan. 30.
Tom Ball, county controller and secretary of the Salary Board, said the new position is held by Carl Milks, a retired Bradford city police officer.
