"People Helping People" is more than a motto for the Kane Eagles club.
It's a reality.
The club is very involved in community service and in donating money to help Kane children, senior citizens and the needy.
"Being able to help people is very rewarding," club Secretary Barb Gadley-Cheeks said. "When you join the Eagles, you're going to be helping the community. That's just what Eagles do."
The Kane club is part of the international Fraternal Order of Eagles (FOE) founded in 1898. The Kane chapter-- called an "Aerie"-- was formed in 1903.
January 19th
A new organization has been formed in Kane to honor U.S. soldiers killed while serving their country.
The Staff Sgt. Ken VanGiesen Memorial Fallen Soldier Tribute Foundation is named for the Kane native who was killed last July while deployed in Afghanistan with the Pennsylvania Army National Guard.
Amie Gullifer, VanGiesen's only sister, is co-president of the new non-profit organization along with John Bernhard of Mt. Jewett. Other foundation officers include Fred Tarnaski, vice president, and Renee McKay, secretary.
Tax documents for 2011 will soon start arriving in the mail, and it is never too soon to start getting organized to ensure a maximum refund with minimal difficulties.Â
Jennifer Jenkins, Internal Revenue Service media relations for Ohio and Western Pa., had some basic tips to offer taxpayers.Â
“The first thing most people wonder is what's the deadline to file, and this year the deadline is Tuesday, April 17,†Jenkins said.Â

In his job as a deputy in the McKean County Sheriff's Department, Dave Engman of Kane said he "strived to treat people like I would want to be treated in that situation."
He said he plans to "carry over" this principle as he begins his duty as the new judge for the Kane District Court.
"Most judges want to be known as a fair judge," Engman said. He said the "law dictates the majority of your job and how a district judge proceeds" in handling cases.

BROOKVILLE — Jurors during the third day of the Steven P. Rebert's double-homicide trial learned how he left a video trail of surveillance of him stopping at Sheetz as he made his way to the home of Wayne and Vickie Shugar, Coal Tipple Road, Brockway.
Rebert, formerly of Emporium, faces double homicide charges in the shooting deaths of the Shugars, both 61, who were found dead April 12, 2010, in their home.

BROOKVILLE — The son of a slain Snyder Township couple took the witness stand Tuesday during the second day of Steven P. Rebert's double-homicide trial, saying that when he arrived at his parents' home and found both of their vehicle parked in the driveway, he began fearing the worst.
Jason Shugar, a son of the victims — Victoria and Wayne Shugar, Coal Tipple Road — said he last spoke to his parents Saturday, April 10, 2010, and described how his mother had asked him to help with removing some items in a second-floor room that the couple wanted to refurbish.

The Kane Borough Sewer Authority voted 3-0 Monday to take what has been called "the first step" in a plan to sell treated sewage water to drillers of Marcellus Shale natural gas wells.
Dave Peterson, the new chairman of the five-member authority, joined with board members Frank Wojcik and Phil Lingenfelter in authorizing KLH Engineers of Pittsburgh to prepare water sale permit applications with the state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).

A four-hour training session on responses to emergencies at natural gas well-sites was held Sunday at the Kane Fire Hall.
More than 70 volunteer firefighters from eight communities attended the program.
In addition to Kane, firefighters at the forum came from Hamlin Township (Hazel Hurst), Hamilton Township (Ludlow), Highland Township (James City), Wilcox, Lafayette Township, Lewis Run and Otto Township.
State Fire Instructors Bruce Manning of McKean County and John Eckel of Venango County led the training, which included the distribution of printed materials and a slide show.

The Kane School Board has agreed to partner with the Kane Historic Preservation Society (KHPS) on a research project in the vicinity of Kane High School.
The original home for General Thomas L. Kane and his wife, Elizabeth was located in the area of the high school auditorium, according to the society.
“The home marked the beginning of the community and the growth and development of an area they loved,†the KHPS said in a statement presented Thursday to the school board.
January 12th
The Kane School Board voted 8-0 Thursday to extend the contract of Dr. Maryann Anderson as superintendent of the Kane Area School District.
The five-year extension runs from next September through Sept. 7, 2017. She is currently in the third year of her original three-year contract.
School Board President Dave Westerburg joined with board members Dick Coleman, Ed Kocjancic Jr., Mark Paup, Harry Steele, Stephanie Eckstrom, Larry Lamping and Gary Ziegler in approving the contract extension.
Board member Ken Kane did not attend the meeting, but reportedly agrees with the contract extension.
