The Kane School Board voted 8-0 Thursday to extend the contract of Dr. Maryann Anderson as superintendent of the Kane Area School District.
The five-year extension runs from next September through Sept. 7, 2017. She is currently in the third year of her original three-year contract.
School Board President Dave Westerburg joined with board members Dick Coleman, Ed Kocjancic Jr., Mark Paup, Harry Steele, Stephanie Eckstrom, Larry Lamping and Gary Ziegler in approving the contract extension.
Board member Ken Kane did not attend the meeting, but reportedly agrees with the contract extension.
January 11th
The Kane Area School District is seeking bids for the possible sale of the former Chestnut Street Elementary School.
The school closed following the 2009-10 school year and the new Kane Elementary School adjacent to the Kane Middle School opened for the 2010-11 school year.
Several education-related agencies now are renting space in the former school along Chestnut Street.
JAMES CITY – Through the first 10 days of the New Year, the Highland Township road crew has had little snow to plow.
But, due to unseasonable weather, there is another problem facing residents who live on dirt roads. That problem is dust-- usually an issue in the warmer months of the year.
"We have a dust problem," Township Supervisor Charlie Vaughn said Wednesday at a meeting of the Board of Supervisors at the township building in James City. "This is an unusual problem for this time of the year."

MT. JEWETT – The Mt. Jewett Regional Sewer Authority is sticking by a billing policy that has been established at previous meetings.
One part of the policy makes landlords responsible for delinquent sewer bills incurred by their tenants. Another section of the policy accepts a one-time-only excuse for not paying a bill on time.
Both issues surfaced Tuesday at the authority's monthly meeting at the borough building.
The board has advised Denis Rettger of Mt. Jewett that he is responsible for "unpaid sewer bills" for persons who pay him rent for mobile home sites along Maple Lane.

RIDGWAY - On Monday afternoon, Elk County President Judge Richard Masson handed down a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole to Lawrence Earl Donachy, 36, of St. Marys, who was found guilty of second-degree murder in the April 5-6, 1999 homicide of Irene Challingsworth, a 56-year-old St. Marys beautician.
A new organization at Kane Area High School gives students an opportunity to devote more time to volunteerism in their community.
Members of the group-- called Students Modeling Ideal Life Experiences (S.M.I.L.E.)-- take part in special projects to benefit the community.
The initial members of S.M.I.L.E. include Grace Bicehouse, Emily Truden, Micah Edinger, Brent Rounsville and Salena Winston.
Kathleen Prosperi, an AmeriCorps worker at the high school, formed S.M.I.L.E. to offer students a chance to help with community projects on a year-round basis.
The Board of Directors of the Kane Chamber of Commerce has chosen the late Jim Salvamoser as its "Citizen-of-the-Year" for 2011.
The Chamber also has named the Kane Eagles Club as the local "Business-of-the-Year."
Recipients will be honored at a dinner scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 26 at the Kane Country Club.
The event is slated to begin with cocktails at 5 p.m. and the ceremony at 6 p.m. Tickets for the event are now available at the Kane Chamber of Commerce Office, 54 Fraley St.
The following criminal cases have been filed in Kane District Court.

*Randy Haight, 21, of 13 W. Main St., Ludlow, is charged with endangering the welfare of a child.
Kane Borough Police Chief Brian Hillard filed the charges after Haight’s 2-year-old daughter allegedly wandered from his former residence along Poplar Street in Kane while Haight was asleep.
A female motorist told police that she nearly struck the child, who reportedly was in the “middle of the road” at Poplar Street and Tionesta Avenue.
January 4th
A large pickup truck jumped a curb late Tuesday night and slammed into the Kane Area Community Center at 46 Fraley St.
Kane Police Chief Brian Hillard identified the driver as Nicholas Abplanalp, 18, of Kane. The driver and his passenger-- Mike Shrubb, 18, of Kane-- were not injured in the incident, police said.
According to police, Abplanalp was operating a white Dodge pickup truck and was traveling north on Fraley Street in Uptown Kane.
Just before 11 p.m. Tuesday, the truck veered right and jumped the curb, police said.
By a 5-1 vote, the Kane Borough Council has re-elected Howard Kane as its president for 2012.
The election took place Tuesday at council's annual reorganizational meeting at the borough building on Bayard Street.
Councilwomen Janet Bard and Holly Harris and Councilmen Bill Tunall and Dennis Drost supported Kane for the position.
Councilman John Gentilman cast the lone negative vote.
By 6-0 votes, council elected Bard as vice president and Drost as president pro tem. He will conduct meetings in the absence of both Kane and Bard.
