Katherine M. "Kay" Hanson

Katherine M. "Kay" Hanson, 88, formerly of Wetmore Road, died Friday, Aug. 1, 2014 at the Lutheran Home at Kane.
Born June 4, 1926, in Wetmore Township, she was a daughter of Martin and Eva Kralick Merlock. On Jan. 24, 1953, in Mt. Jewett, she married Paul R. Hanson who preceded her in death in 1998.
Kay was a homemaker and also owned and operated the Colonial Inn after the death of her sister, Anne Pearson. She also helped in the rectory at St. Callistus Church and previously at St. Patrick's rectory in Wellington, Ohio.
Surviving are a daughter and several nieces and nephews.

Josephine Brothers

Josephine Brothers, 81, of 125 Yarnell St., Kane, and Sarasota, Fla., died Wednesday, July 30, 2014 at UPMC Hamot.
Born Sept. 10, 1932, in Kane, she was a daughter of the late Carl and Rose Bifano Nicolazzo. On April 25, 1952, in Kane, she married James Brothers who preceded her in death.
Before retirement, Josephine had worked for Syroco Industries of Syracuse, N.Y. and had also been a bus driver for the  school district of Baldwinsville, N.Y.

Jack D. Barber

Jack D. Barber, 84, of Erie, died Friday, Aug. 1, 2014 at Manchester Commons following a brief illness.
He was born in Kane on Sept. 19, 1929, a son of the late Walter Hartwin and Ida Isabell Goodwin Barber.
Jack was raised in Burning Well, graduated from Mt. Jewett High School and then went on to the General Motors Institute in Detroit graduating in 1948.
Jack served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.

Phyllis A. Sloan, 74, of 127 Vine St., Marienville and Osteen, Fla, died Wednesday, July 30, 2014 at her home.

Lottie I. Zoretich, 85, of Route 948 in Highland Township, died Saturday afternoon, July 26, 2014 at UPMC Presbyterian in Pittsburgh.
Born July 10, 1929 in Kane, she was the daughter of Thomas E. and Mabel A. Reaghart McClain. On Aug. 1, 1959 in Marienville, she married Matt Zoretich, Jr., who died in 1993.
Lottie had worked at the Kane Shirt Factory, then at Stackpole Corp. in Kane for several years. She was very loyal to the First Baptist Church of Kane.

John F. Hill Jr.

John F. Hill Jr., 68, of 231 Grove Ave., Ridgway, died Wednesday evening, July 23, 2014 at his residence following a brief illness.
He was born Sept. 1, 1945 in Erie, son of the late John F. Hill Sr. and Helen E. (Smith) Hill
On Dec. 28, 1968, he married Karol Givens.
He had resided in Ridgway for the past 36 years, but he was also a former Kane resident.
He was a 1963 graduate of the Kane High School, a 1973 graduate of Penn State and a 1976 graduate of the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science.
He served in the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of the Vietnam Era.

Elizabeth Ann “Beth” McConnell Sallack

Elizabeth Ann “Beth” McConnell Sallack, 90, beloved wife of Myles Sallack for more than 60 years, died peacefully at her home in Florence, S.C., on July 24, 2014.
Born June 27, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Howard and Ruth Johnson McConnell. She and Myles moved to South Carolina in 1994 after residing in Johnsonburg and Kane for more than 40 years.
A 1942 graduate of Kane High School, Beth graduated from Mt. Aloysius College and Montefiore Hospital’s Med Tech Program. She worked as a lab technician at Tokyo Army Hospital during the Korean War.

Carol J. Benicky

Carol J. Benicky, 75, of Belle Vernon died Tuesday, July 22, 2014 in Thorpes Personal Care Home.
Born in Kane on Feb. 16, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Carl and Doris (Hutchens) Gustafson.
Carol retired from Corning Glass and also worked at Dick’s Sporting Goods Warehouse.
She is survived by her two brothers, Robert Gustafson of Kane, and Richard Gustafson of Columbus, Ohio; and a sister, Janice Crew of Venice, Fla.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Benicky Jr.; and a brother, Thomas Gustafson.
