Mae J. Miller

Mae J. Miller, 85, of 5034 Highland Rd., near Kane, died Saturday evening, July 16, 2011 at Hamot Medical Center in Erie following a brief illness.
Born March 5, 1926 in Kane, she was the daughter of Robert E. and Ruby M. Nystrom Hadfield. In 1947, she married Cyril Gabriel, who died in 1964; and in 1972, she married Earl Miller, who also preceded her in death.
A 1944 graduate of Kane Area High School, Mrs. Miller was a clerk at the former A&P store in Kane for over 30 years, and later for the Quick Stop Market for over 20 years.

Robert W. Barber

Robert W. Barber, 86, of Mt. Jewett, passed away on Tuesday morning, July 12, 2011, at his residence. 
Mr. Barber was born on July, 5, 1925 in Hazelhurst, the son of Ernest and Nellie Grimm Barber. He attended school in Hazelhurst and is a Methodist by faith.
A veteran of World War II, he was a seaman first class aboard the USS Spica and served in the South Pacific from July 1943 through September 1946.
Mr. Barber is survived by his wife of 58 years, the former Gloria Peters whom he married on Nov. 22, 1952 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Mt. Jewett.

John E. Gentilman

John E. Gentilman, 91, formerly of 536 Park Ave., Kane, died Monday morning, July 11, 2011 at The Lutheran Home at Kane.
Born Aug. 22, 1919, he was the son of Vincent and Theresa Ventri Gentilman.
Mr. Gentilman was a state policeman in the Kane area for over 20 years.  Earlier, he served in the U.S. Army Engineers during WWII.
He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, VFW #1132 in Kane, and Kane Lodge #566, F&AM.
Surviving are a son, John J. Gentilman of Kane; a sister, Helen Zicek of Frederick, Md., and several nieces and nephews.

Barry M. Remick

Barry M. Remick, 54, of 20 Tionesta Ave., Kane, died Sunday morning, July 10, 2011, at the Kane Community Hospital.
Born Sept. 10, 1956 in Dubois, he was the son of James M. and Ella M. "Maisie" Hooten Remick.
Barry attended Blaisdell School in Bradford and graduated from Johnsonburg High School. He worked at Futures Rehabilitation Center for several years.
He is survived by his father, with whom he lived; and a brother, Scott M. Remick of Kane.
His mother preceded in death in 2006.

Romaine Irene Spicer

Romaine Irene Spicer, 80, died unexpectedly at 9 p.m., Wednesday, July 6, 2011 in The Lutheran Home at Kane where she had been a resident since 2005.
She was born in Sheffield on Nov. 19, 1930, a daughter to the late John and Grace Anderson Rogers.
A lifelong Sheffield resident, Irene had been employed as a bartender for 20 years at the Lee House. She was also a member of the Sheffield Vets Club, Sheffield Rod and Gun, and loved to play Bingo.

Gertrude E. Sanders

Gertrude E. Sanders, 102, formerly of 220 Haines St. in Kane, died Wednesday evening, July 6, 2011, at Lake Placid Health Care Center in Lake Placid, Fla.
Born Sept. 10, 1908, in DuBois, she was the daughter of David and Jennie Heberling Smyers. In 1926 in DuBois, she married Raymond Cochran, who preceded her in death. In 1962 in Kane, she married George W. Sanders, who died in 1983.

Ronald J, Gruber

Ronald J, Gruber, 65, formerly of Sugar Grove, passed away Tuesday, July 5, 2011, at Snyder Memorial Home in Marienville. 
He was born in Jamestown, N.Y. on Dec. 21, 1945, a son of the late Erma (Hitchcock) and Ray  Gruber. He served in the U.S. Marines as a sergeant in the Vietnam War where he received the  National Defense Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, Vietnamese Service Medal, Combat Action Ribbon and Good Conduct Medal. He was retired from his employment at Bush Industries.   

David J. DiBernardo

David J. DiBernardo, 32, of Centre Hall, passed away on Friday, July 1, 2011, in Harris Township, Centre County. Born on Oct. 3, 1978, in Bradford, he was a son of Harvie Beavers and the late Margaret (Buhl) Beavers. He was married to Kari A. (DeBottis) DiBernardo, who survives at home. He was a director of Land for Eclipse Resources in State College and was a certified landsman. David enjoyed riding ATV, physical exercising, fishing, and loved all types of animals; but most of all he was a devoted husband and father.

Leo B. Holland

Leo B. Holland, age 90, of Oak Ridge, passed away Wednesday, June 8, 2011, at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center.

He was born in Kane, Pa., on Nov. 4, 1920. He served for three years in the United States Army/Air Corps during World War II in the South Pacific Theater and was promoted to the rank of Master Sergeant.

William G. Bender

William G. Bender, age 83, a longtime resident of Burlington, Vermont, passed away on June 05, 2011 at Birchwood Terrace Healthcare.
He was born on June 24, 1927 in Warren, son of Philip B. Bender and Florence gaylord Bender. William spent his childhood in Kane and graduated from Mansfield University with a BS degree in music education. There he was a member of the woodwind ensemble and was the featured oboe soloist for this group while in school.
A Navy veteran from WWII, he visited Hiroshima three months after the bombing and recalled the devastation.
