DUKE CENTER â€“ The Kane Lady Wolvesâ€™ basketball team took home the 41st Annual Otto-Eldred Holiday Tournament title with a 55-46 win over Sheffield on Saturday. The Lady Wolves won the tournament for the fourth consecutive year.
The Kane Wolves lost to Cameron County by 15 points last week in their final game before the holiday break. The Wolves took on the same Red Raider squad in the opening game of Thursdayâ€™s Sheffield Sports Boostersâ€™ Holiday Tournament, but this time the Kane squad gave the team from Emporium all they could handle. While Kane coach Brian Wymerâ€™s squad lost to Cameron County by a score of 64-55, the game was a one-point contest into the fourth quarter.
I was now awakening to my first full day in Katmai National Park in southwestern Alaska. I had finally seen some monster Alaskan brown bears in their natural habitat. The weather had held out, being cool and very comfortable with temperatures in the high 60s and low 70s. I was enjoying Mother Natureâ€™s air conditioning, unaware of the near 100-degree temperatures both in Kane and in the lower 48 for July 2011.
This past Saturday, 19 of Kaneâ€™s JO Wrestlers traveled to compete at Salamanca, N.Y. The team went up against wrestlers from Erie, Gowanda, Coudersport, Olean, and Hornell, to name a few. Kane took the second-place team trophy as well as earned individually, six first-place trophies, one second-place trophy, three third-place trophies, and two fourth-place trophies. The JO wrestlerâ€™s will be in Shinglehouse Dec. 29.
The Kane Lady Wolvesâ€™ basketball team defeated a scrappy Port Allegany squad on Wednesday night in the Wolvesâ€™ Den. The Wolves used solid play from their post players to pull away in the second half and move to 4-1 on the season with the 60-36 win.
The Smethport Hubbers defeated the Kane Wolvesâ€™ wrestling team 39-28 in dual meet action in the Wolvesâ€™ Den on Tuesday night. The Hubbers won seven matches on the mat and received a forfeit at heavyweight to earn the win against the Wolves.
The Smethport Hubbers used 30 points by Zach Smith to help propel them to a 63-44 win over Kane in the Wolvesâ€™ Den on Monday night. Smith, a preseason D9 All-Star, lived up to the billing as the Smethport senior scored on drives to the hoop, on offensive rebounds under the basket and nailed a few threes to complete his second consecutive 30-point night.
The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders rebounded from a Wednesday night loss to Johnsonburg with a resounding 47-32 win over the Kane Lady Wolves. Kaneâ€™s only lead of the night came after the gameâ€™s first basket. ECC coach Ken Pistnerâ€™s squad outscored the home team 13-1 the rest of the first quarter on their way to the victory.
The Elk County Catholic Crusader basketball team picked up their first victory of the season in front of a home crowd on Friday night as they defeated the Kane Wolves 66-48 at the ECCHS gymnasium.
The Crusaders led 16-11 at the end of the first quarter, 32-23 at the half, and 48-31 at the end of the third quarter.
On Sunday, Dec. 9, the dancers at Studio K held their second annual Student Choreography Concert at the Kane Community Center. Eighteen dances were performed.
