The Kane Lady Wolves basketball team hosted an undefeated Curwensville Golden Tide team Friday night and weren’t very hospitable, handing the Tide a 51-46 loss. In a hard fought game from start to finish, the Lady Wolves led by one at the half and hit some key free throws down the stretch to hold on for the win.
The Kane Wolves came into Tuesday night’s matchup with the Smethport Hubbers giving up six forfeits. While Kane got one back in return, the 30-point difference was too much to overcome and the Wolves ended up losing 47-24 in the Wolves’ Den.

The Cranberry Berries made the long trip to Kane Monday night and headed south with a 58-47 win over the Wolves. It appeared as though the Wolves had the long bus trip as they started out slowly offensively. The Berries jumped out to a 13-3 lead after one quarter and although the hosts got to within eight, 52-44 with 2:25 left in the game, the Wolves just couldn’t overcome the early deficit.
JOHNSONBURG – Kane girls basketball used a 9-0 third-quarter run to break open a tie game en route to a 42-33 win over St. Marys Saturday afternoon at the Johnsonburg Tip-Off Tournament held at Johnsonburg Area High School.
St. Marys had tied the game at 18-all on a Kaitlyn Barackman hoop with 4:30 to play in the third quarter. The Lady Wolves responded with a 9-0 spurt which started with a bucket from Sydney Dyne and was followed by hoops from Trinity Clark and Camryn Cummings. After Dyne split a pair of free throws, a Cummings layup had Kane up 27-18 with 1:19 left in the third quarter.
JOHNSONBURG – A runaway defeat turned into a victory for Coudersport girls basketball Friday night.
Coudersport rallied from a 16-4 first-quarter deficit to take a 44-43 win over Kane at the Johnsonburg Tip-Off Tournament at Johnsonburg Area High School.
Emily Morey hit a short jumper with eight seconds left to put the Lady Falcons ahead. Kane had one final chance but could not get a fluent possession together and did not get a possible game-winning shot off in time.
The Kane Wrestling team had one of their best seasons in recent history last year, sending seven wrestlers to the AA Northwest Regional Wrestling tournament and having a PIAA Champion (Evan DeLong) and third-place state finisher (Cody Blankenship). Unfortunately for coach Mike Swartwood, only one of those regional qualifiers is returning this season, Austin Hulings. Swartwood has limited lineup options this year as he has only 11 wrestlers on the roster.
Kane girls’ basketball coach Dave Kiehl thinks this year’s team has a good mix of size and experience. Kiehl, beginning his seventh year at the helm of the Lady Wolves, lost two players to graduation and his starting point guard to a move outside of the district, but is adding some good young players that will see extensive minutes on the court.
Matt Gasbarre is in his second season as head coach of the Kane boys’ basketball team. Gasbarre led the 2013-2014 Wolves to a 7-16 record and a spot in the playoffs. The Wolves’ season came to a close with a heartbreaking 44-43 loss to Karns City in the District 9 AA quarterfinals.
The Sheffield Wolverines used a big third quarter to propel themselves to a 66-53 victory over the Kane Wolves. The Wolves' season opener was pushed back from last Friday to Wednesday night after the extended football season had Wolves’ head basketball coach Matt Gasbarre holding tryouts just a week ago.
