RIDGWAY â€“Â The Elk County Courthouse will see a shift as 2014 winds down as two-term Elk County Sheriff Jeff Krieg will not serve out his final year at the helm and will instead retire.
Krieg's decision, kept largely under wraps for the duration of the year, was initially made as far back as January.
Ridgway boys golf won the team season opener 195-246 over Kane Tuesday afternoon on a hot afternoon at Laurel Mill Golf Club.
Josh Roselli of Ridgway was the medalist for Tuesday's match as he carded a 36 for the Elkers. Mitchell Stark finished one stroke higher with a 37 and TJ Schlimm finished with a 39 for Ridgway. Nick Simon finished with a 41 for Ridgway and Ben Ames carded a 42 for the Elkers to round out the top five.
Mike Sorge finished at 47 for Ridgway while Cory Oknefski had a 48. Austin Amacher finished with a 55 for the Elkers.
Ernest L. Mason, 62, of 200 Pleasant St., formerly of Lewis Run, died Monday, Aug. 18, 2014 at The Pavilion at BRMC after a lengthy illness.
Born Oct. 22, 1951, in Olean, N.Y., he was a son of the late Kenneth Mason and Reta (Hewitt) Mason, who survives of Bradford.
On Dec. 31, 1982,Â in Lewis Run, he married Cathy (Null) Mason, who died Nov. 30, 1996.
Kane Community Hospital (KCH) has been recognized with the â€śMost Wiredâ€”Small and Ruralâ€ť award for the seventh time.Â
KCH is affiliated with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC)-- Hamot Medical Center in Erie.
A hospital is considered "small" and "rural" based on having fewer of 100 beds and located outside a Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) as designated by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget (OMB).Â
Organizations such as KCH, not recognized on the primary Most Wired lis, are included in the Most Wiredâ€”Small and Rural category.
LUDLOW â€“ A Civil War encampment will be held Friday, Saturday and Sunday-- Sept. 19-21-- at Wildcat Park near Ludlow.
More than 20 individuals dressed as Union soldiers will actually camp out in tents for two nights in the ball field area at the rustic park along Route 6 just east of Ludlow.
The "soldiers" will re-enact the life in a Union Army camp during the Civil War. Various activities will take place throughout the three-day event.
EAST SMETHPORT â€“ Abby Price, Miss Smethport High, has been crowned as the McKean County Fair Queen.
The coronation took place Saturday night on the final day of the 109th fair at the mini-stage at the fairgrounds in East Smethport.
Sarah Eaton, Miss Bradford High, was named as the first runner-up.
Bettina Cherry, Miss Kane High, is one of five contestants in the county fair queen contest. All five high schools in the county have contestants.
The Kane Veterans of Foreign Wars hosted a â€śTroop Support Drop-offâ€ť on Saturday at their club on Wetmore Avenue. Volunteers met those wanting to donate at their vehicles and accepted items and cash donations to send to local soldiers deployed overseas.
BENEZETTE â€“Â Just over a month ago, Governor Tom Corbett signed House Bill 2169 into law. The bill, in part, created a special conservation license that could be chanced off annually to raise funds to benefit conservation and education efforts in Pennsylvania's Elk Country. Working together, in a span of roughly four weeks the Keystone Elk Country Alliance (KECA) and Pennsylvania Game Commission (PGC) were able to raise over $150,000 selling tickets for the first ever Pa. Elk Tag Raffle.
BENEZETTE â€“Â It was a beautiful weekend in Benezette for the 2014 Pennsylvania Great Outdoors Elk Expo, which was held at the Elk Country Visitor Center on Saturday and Sunday.
"We really couldn't have asked for better weather today," Elk Country Visitor Center Operations Manager Carla Wehler said on Saturday afternoon. "It wasn't too hot, wasn't too cold, and there was no rain. It was just a beautiful day and was a little bit overcast. We're pretty excited."
BENEZETTE â€“Â Of the 108 elk licenses awarded by the Pennsylvania Game Commission (PGC) during their annual elk license drawing, threeâ€“all for antlerless elkâ€“went to residents of St. Marys. This year's drawing was held at 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoon in conjunction with the Pa. Great Outdoors Elk Expo at the Elk Country Visitor Center in Benezette. It was the first time since 2008 that the elk license drawing has been held during the Elk Expo.
