Export man harvests 7x7 bull elk

QUEHANNA – When Randy Caldwell's friends first called him to tell him he had been drawn for a bull elk license in this year's weeklong elk hunt he thought they were playing a practical joke on him.
The Export native recalled that he was in disbelief at first after friends told him they saw in the paper that his name had been drawn.

No one injured as fire destroys Rt. 6 house

LANTZ CORNERS – A fast-moving fire early Monday morning destroyed the Jason Rankin residence at 9261 Route 6 in Hamlin Township.
No injuries were reported, according to Dan "Beans" Gustafson, chief of the Mt. Jewett Volunteer Fire Department.

Mt. Jewett council plans workshop on budget

MT. JEWETT – The proposed 2014 budget for Mt. Jewett is still a work in progress. Rather than act Monday to adopt a tentative spending plan for next year, the Mt. Jewett Borough Council scheduled a "work session" to discuss the budget.

Kane police chief expected to waive hearing

BRADFORD – Suspended Kane Police Chief Brian Hillard is expected to waive his preliminary hearing in a criminal case filed by the state Attorney General's office.
Hillard is accused of falsifying firearms training records for three Kane police officers.

Red Kettle Campaign gears up in Kane

The Salvation Army’s world famous Red Kettles have been an American tradition since 1891. These familiar Red Kettles will be hitting streets and shopping areas soon, and The Salvation Army is seeking volunteer bell ringers to raise much-needed funds to help their neighbors in need. Student and community groups are encouraged to volunteer their time. Please contact your local churches to sign up and volunteer to ring the bells.

Putnam claims Gold Pin tourney title over Mitskavich, 185-183

DuBOIS—DuBois Lanes hosted the second District 4 youth gold pin tournament Sunday afternoon with Cyclone’s Wayne Putnam claiming the title.
Twenty-two bowlers bowled a three-game qualifying round with the top five bowlers matching up in the step ladder finals.

Northampton man's hunt to be featured on television show

QUEHANNA – Jim Scharnitz of Northampton got to have the experience of a lifetime on Monday morning as he successfully harvested a 7x6 bull elk while hunting with his father and guides from Elk County Outfitters.

17 elk harvested as of Monday afternoon

QUEHANNA – As of just after 3 p.m. on Monday afternoon a total of 17 elk had been brought to the Pennsylvania Game Commission's elk check station in Quehanna. The animals were all harvested on the opening day of this year's elk hunt and consisted of seven bulls and 10 cows. The 17 tags were among 86 awarded to hunters this year, with 26 tags being drawn for antlered elk and 60 for antlerless.
