Cheerleaders compete at Erie meet

The Kane Area High School Competition Cheerleading team competed at the Shout! Great Lakes Championships on Saturday, March 14 at the Gannon Rec Center in Erie and came home with first place in the Varsity Non-Tumble Division and second place in the Varsity Division. This ended their six-week winning streak in both divisions. First place in the Varsity division was Villa Maria Academy out of Erie. 
"The team just wasn’t firing on all cylinders on Saturday," said Kane coach Chris Niklaus.

Buck honored by brothers throughout the state

CLEARFIELD – Nearly 1,000 family members, friends, and emergency responders throughout the state filled Clearfield Area High School's gym Friday afternoon to bid farewell to the late Jeffrey Scott Buck Jr.
The 18-year-old firefighter died Monday, March 9 from injuries suffered while fighting a fire Tuesday, March 3 in the 700 block of Daisy Street in Clearfield.
He was a senior at Clearfield Area High School and a member of the Lawrence Township Fire Company. Buck was trapped beneath a porch roof that collapsed during the Daisy Street blaze.

KASD approves trips, expands programs

During Thursday's Kane Area School District school board meeting, the school board approved numerous trips, the addition of several summer driver's education courses and the purchase of music and Vo-Ag equipment.
On Thursday's agenda were requests for five separate trips for Kane Area School District students and staff members, all of which were unanimously approved throughout the meeting.
The first trip request was to allow for Krystal Nuhfer to attend the PATS Annual Clinical Symposia in Gettysburg from June 11-13 at a cost of $499.50.

Olivia Blackmore wins Kane High School Talent Show

Olivia Blackmore was selected as the winner of the Talent Show held Thursday afternoon at the Kane High School auditorium.
A sophomore, Blackmore sang "I Dreamed the Dream."
Joey Bernard, also a sophomore, placed second. He sang "Amazing Grace."
The dance team of Samantha Bigley and Hunter Zuzek placed third. Bigley is a junior. Zuzek is a freshman. They danced and performed acrobatic maneuvers to the song "My Immortal."

Couch named as new Streets Department chief in Kane

Joe Couch is the new foreman of the Streets Department in Kane.
He replaces Mike Beane, who will retire April 1.
Kane Borough Manager Don Payne introduced Couch as the new streets chief Wednesday at a meeting of the Kane Borough Council.
Couch, who resides on Yarnell Street in Kane, has worked for the Streets Department for a year and a half. He began as a part-time employee in September 2013 and became a full-time worker July 28, 2014.

Wilcox woman is named as airport manager

LAFAYETTE TOWNSHIP – Alicia Dankesreiter of Wilcox has been promoted to the position of manager of the Bradford Regional Airport in Lafayette Township.
Dankesreiter has been serving as the "interim" director since September.
The authority voted 5-0 Wednesday to elevate Dankesreiter to the position of airport manager.
Authority members Joe DeMott (Port Allegany), John Satterwhite (Bradford), Rob Huber (Bradford), Ken Kane (Kane) and Barbie Cummings (Kane) approved the appointment of the airport manager after a private executive session.

Detailed work on East Branch dam entails multi-phase project

WILCOX – The East Branch Dam Safety Initiative project is now in full swing following several years of discussion and planning.
Just 10 years after it was constructed a serious internal erosion episode occurred at the dam, roughly the size of a school bus, resulting in the lowering of the lake to make repairs. There have been no observed changes in seepage conditions or performance of the dam in the time since repairs were completed.

Payment to Mt. Jewett opens Lantz Corners sewers

MT. JEWETT – A payment of more than $100,000 to the Mt. Jewett Regional Sewer Authority opens the door for the long-awaited Lantz Corners Sewer District.
Jim Trussell, chairman of the Hamlin Township Board of Supervisors, presented a check Tuesday to Patrick McGuire, chairman of the sewer authority.
The check of $101,750 is the balance due before about 150 sewer district customers can connect to new sewage collection lines.

Several local races loom in May 19 primary election

SMETHPORT – Several local races are shaping up in the May 19 primary election based on party nominating petitions filed with the McKean County Board of Elections.
Here are some of the races based on petitions filed by 10 a.m. Tuesday, six hours prior to the 4 p.m. deadline:
Hamlin Township-- Kenneth Stroup of Lindholm Road and James Myers of Route 6 are both seeking the Republican nomination for a six-year term as supervisor.

4 seek nominations for 4 Kane council seats

SMETHPORT – Four candidates have filed nominating petitions with the McKean County Board of Elections for four seats up for election on the Kane Borough Council.
Council President Howard Kane of 800 Welsh St. and Councilwoman Holly Harris of 21 Spruce St. are seeking Democratic party nominations in the May 19 primary.
Councilman Tom Kase of 319 Birch St. and newcomer David Walker of 28 Pine Ave. are seeking Republican party nominations in the primary.
