The Kane Area High School gym was filled with Kane Area High School academic award winners and their families on Wednesday night at the schoolâ€™s annual academic banquet. Eighty KAHS students were recognized for their academic excellence.
Virgil C. Nelson, 81, of 15 Church St. in Ludlow, died Thursday afternoon, May 8, 2014 at the Kane Community Hospital.
Born Sept. 22, 1932 in Kane, he was the son of Frank E. and Hannah C. Freeburg Nelson. On June 25, 1955 in Kane, he married Carol â€śJeanâ€ť Scott, who survives.
Mr. Nelson served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, discharged as corporal.
He was a banker for 38 years for the former Warren National Bank in Sheffield, then Kane, and finally Warren, retiring as comptroller.
Over 250 Special Olympics athletes from throughout McKean County met at Kane Area High School on Wednesday to compete in the 39th annual Special Olympics/Zippo Track & Field Meet.
