Cole Young will be certainly have a story to share with his classmates when he returns to the fifth grade at Bradford Woods Elementary School this fall about what he did over summer vacation. The 10-year-old son of former Kane resident Jo Anne (Kocjancic) Young will be one of 24 young baseball players competing in next Mondayâ€™s Major League Baseballâ€™s Pitch, Hit & Run finals.
Douglas Jon Ewing, 52, of Palmyra, died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Friday, May 30, 2014.
He was born Friday, Feb. 2, 1962 in Kane, to the late Ronald Paul and Jean Marie (Magnuson) Ewing. He is survived by his loving wife of 28 years, Jan (Parana) Ewing.
Dr. Krista Jamerson and Keith Hastings are the newest members of the Kane School Board.
They were appointed Thursday at a school board meeting at the Kane Middle School auditorium.
Jamerson of 111 Hemlock Ave., Kane, replaces Dave Westerburg. Hastings of 69 Grandview Rd., Wetmore Township, replaces Ken Kane.
Claire Ann Depto, the newly-elected president of the Kane School Board, is looking ahead to what she terms "a big challenge."
"There's a lot of responsibility," she said Thursday after conducting her first meeting as school board president. "It's going to be a big challenge."
The board on Thursday elected Depto as president to replace Ken Kane, who resigned. Depto had been the vice president.
"I thank the board members for their confidence in me," Depto said. "I feel everyone on the board is an equal."
The Kane Chamber of Commerce invites pet owners to participate in the Third Annual Pet Parade on Wednesday, July 30. The parade will begin at 6 p.m. at the SMP parking lot and head to Field Street, where prizes will be awarded. The event will include games and contests for all ages.
A long-planned project to renovate the three tennis courts and basketball court at Evergreen Park in Kane appears ready for implementation.
A $58,000 contract for the work is expected to be awarded Friday to Nagle Athletic Surfaces of East Syracuse, N.Y.
The contract is expected to be awarded to Nagle by the Smethport-based McKean County Redevelopment and Housing Authority. This is the agency that oversees local projects using federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) money.
SMETHPORT â€“ Mt. Jewett resident Jim Sharer is expected to serve as the acting sheriff for McKean County.
Sharer, the first deputy sheriff for the county, is expected to take over Friday.
In a letter dated Sunday, County Sheriff Bradley A. Mason told the McKean County Board of Commissioners that he would resign as warden of the McKean County Jail as of midnight tonight.

There reportedly are three candidates to fill two vacancies on the Kane School Board.
The board is expected to fill the vacancies tonight when it meets at 7 p.m. at the Kane Middle School auditorium. The meeting is open to the public.
MT. JEWETT â€“ A day after the sale of the Mt. Jewett water system, plans were made to seek a possible buyer for the Mt. Jewett sewage operation.
The Mt. Jewett Regional Sewer Authority agreed Tuesday to advertise for bids for the proposed sale of the sewage system.
