Youth bowling coach is Kane's 'citizen-of-the-year'

Over the past 30 years, John "Orson" Carlson has coached hundreds of young bowlers as the volunteer director of the youth bowling program at the Kane Elks Lodge.
"I get a lot of enjoyment," Carlson said in explaining why he continues to spend every Saturday at the Elks bowling alley over the 17-week youth bowling program.

Troopers seeking help in yearlong investigation

'Minor damage' is reported in Kane electrical fire

"We dodged a bullet," Kane Fire Chief Tim Holt said Monday afternoon while on the scene of a reported fire at 387 Forest Ave., Wetmore Township.
Holt said the fire, blamed on an electrical problem, burned the insulation off a plugged-in power cord to a gas-fired clothes dryer.

I have written many times about my search for the elusive and rare visitor from the far north, the snowy owl. As far as birds of prey are concerned, the snowy owl is at the top of my “want to see’ list. In late December of 2012 and early January of 2013, reports of snowy owl sightings started to show up. Not in big numbers, but they were seen here and there. In my case it was mostly “there.” I ventured to the shores of Lake Erie, on Presque Isle, with no luck. I probably had waited too long, and the owl or owls, was gone.

Kane graduate student aids arts program

ERIE – Educators and student-teachers at Carpe Diem Academy in Erie will introduce a contemporary teaching method called Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) into their lesson plans in the spring.
Funded in part by a $5,000 ArtsErie grant, the progressive after-school program will integrate critical response in visual art, partnering with language and literacy.

Kersey home damaged on fire

KERSEY – An early morning fire on Sunday significantly damaged a house at 204 Dagus Mines Rd. in Kersey.
Elk Company 3 (Fox Township) and Fox Township Ambulance were dispatched at 5:03 a.m. and Elk Company 1 (Crystal Fire Department) followed at 5:20 a.m.

ECC defeated Kane 51-37 Saturday night

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders captured the 2014 Allegheny Mountain League championship Saturday night by defeating the Kane Lady Wolves by a 51-37 score.
Elk, the North Division champ, reached the title game by defeating the South Division runnerup Brockway Friday night. Kane, the North Division second seed, defeated the South Division champion DuBois Central Friday night.

Kane competes at Champion Cheer Central Red Hot Cheer and Dance Competition

The Kane Area High School Competition Cheerleaders attended the Champion Cheer Central Red Hot Cheer and Dance Competition at Clarion University on Sunday and competed in two different divisions with two different routines for the first time this season.

Lady Wolves advance to tonight’s AML Finals

The third time proved to be a charm for coach Dave Kiehl’s Kane girls’ basketball team.
The Lady Wolves took on the DuBois Central Catholic Lady Cardinals for the third time in two weeks and beat them for the first time this season, 31-28, on DCC’s home court Friday night. The game was an Allegheny Mountain League [AML] semifinal contest with the winner advancing to tonight’s AML final to be played at St Marys Area High School at 6 p.m. against Elk County Catholic.

Wrestlers finish season

Novice wrestlers from Kane's junior wrestling program recently completed their season. The young first- and second-year wrestlers had an outstanding season, winning many novice tournaments.
