SMETHPORT â€“ A grant will enable the McKean County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) to buy two new meters to detect gases.
Acting Tuesday at their meeting, County Commissioners Joe DeMott, Al Pingie and Cliff Lane approved the grant agreement with the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency (PEMA).
In Part I of my story of the mysterious Army base near Seneca Lake, N.Y., I was trying to find out how I could gain access to this huge decommissioned former military base with its large herd of white deer. The base, which is still not open to the public, was used during World War II to house munitions. You know, like bullets and bombs. After the war it was rumored to house nuclear weapons, which the government never admitted. While building this base, a few whitetail deer were fenced in and hardly noticed.
It wasn't a win, but veteran Kane High volleyball coach Judy Kessler still had plenty of kudos for her young team Tuesday after a nip-and-tuck match with Elk County Catholic (ECC).
RIDGWAY â€“ Ridgway boys soccer won for the second time in a row as the Elkers defeated Kane 4-1 on a hot Tuesday afternoon at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School.
Ridgway coach Todd Voss said the Elkers held together well with the temperatures near 90 degrees and with the Elkers shorthanded due to injuries, at one point having no subs off the bench in the second half.

This is how suspended teacher Jeff Gibbs described his enthusiastic return to the classroom Monday at Kane High School.
He wore a wide grin Monday and appeared to be elated now that he is teaching again after a 10-day suspension at the start of the school year.Â
Administrators said Monday that the extended school year and student pickups are, for the most part, running smoothy.
But several parents challenged this assertion by airing their personal complaints during a meeting of the school board's Curriculum Committee.
LUDLOW â€“ Hamilton Township no longer will need to hire an outside contractor to mow steep banks along township roads.
Acting at a meeting Monday, the Hamilton Township Board of Supervisors voted 3-0 to purchase its own tractor and "boom" mower.
Ridgway exploded for four goals in the second half Monday en route to a 6-0 victory over Kane in a girls soccer match in Kane.
MT. JEWETT â€“ The annual two-day Fall Festival at the Kinzua Bridge State Park will be held Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 21-22.
The non-profit Kinzua Bridge Foundation sponsors the festival to promote the park. There is no admission charge.
Kurt Steinerâ€™s right arm may be a little sore today.
But the pain will be well worth it if he regains a Guinness world record for skipping stones.
Steiner tried to establish the record Friday by skipping smooth Lake Erie beach stones on the Allegheny Reservoir near the mouth of Kinzua Creek at Red Bridge.
