The 2012 Kane Wolves Football team came up just 12 seconds short of a District 9 title in coach Todd Silfies's first year at the helm. The Wolves finished the season with a 7-4 record.
The Wolves' coaching staff must find a few replacements for some key departing seniors. Coach Silfies is hesitant to use the word â€śreplace,â€ť insisting that this is â€śa new year, a new team and will have a new look.â€ť While there will be a number of new faces in key positions, Silfies does have 12 returning letter winners.
Kane cross country coach Adam Smelko is eagerly awaiting the 2013 season. Team members have logged a lot of miles over the summer training for this season. Coach Smelko feels that this year, the Kane boysâ€™ team has â€śboth quality and quantity.â€ť
The Kane cheerleading teams recently completed our camp and started our regular season practices.
The fall season consists of the Kane Area High School varsity cheerleaders and the Kane Area Middle School cheerleaders.
The Kane boysâ€™ soccer team struggled last year, a young team playing against some of the best soccer players District 9 has ever seen. Kane Coach Ernie Chamberlainâ€™s squad battled through a long season and only lost one senior to graduation. Most of the players are back a year bigger, stronger and quicker and ready to get some wins under their belts.
Kane boysâ€™ golf coach Nathan Smith has a number of talented, but relatively inexperienced golfers on the team this season. The veteran coach has a few seniors on the 2013 squad, but the golfers with the most experience are underclassmen.
SMETHPORT â€“ If the state gives its blessing, a new owner of the 17.5-acre Kane Magnetics complex at 700 Elk Ave. in Kane won't be paying property taxes until 2023.
The McKean County Board of Commissioners agreed Tuesday to place the defunct plant in a tax-relief program known as the Keystone Opportunity Zone (KOZ).

Paul A. Venteicher, 82, of Edgewood, Iowa, died on Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2013, at the Edgewood Convalescent Home.
He was born on May 21, 1931, in Tilden, Neb., the son of Anton and Margaret (Bohnenkamp) Venteicher. In 1941, when he was 10 years old, his family moved to a farm north of Manchester, where they lived until 1948 when they moved to a farm west of Edgewood.
On Sept. 10, 1951, Paul was united in marriage to Norma Jean Klostermann at St. Boniface Church in New Vienna. Together they farmed for 57 years. In 2008, they moved to Edgewood.
SMETHPORT â€“ The borough of Kane has not fared well in competing the past two years for a share of federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) money allocated to McKean County.
The borough struck out again Tuesday as the McKean County Board of Commissioners approved the "best use" for $225,825 in CDBG funds awarded to the county.
Local dairy farmer Jim Detrick has been providing the Kane High football team with milk for two-a-day sessions for the last several years. This year he was the recipient of a grant provided by the Grassroots Dairy Promotion Board.
