Lennette Sue "Lennie" Jashurek

Lennette Sue "Lennie" Jashurek, 60, of 226 Yarnell St., passed away Monday morning, Feb. 18, 2013 at her residence.
Born March 22, 1952, in Kane, she was a daughter of  the late Joyce E. Hulings Woods and the late Leonard J. Weatherbee. On May 10, 1970, in Portville, N.Y., she married Robert "Bob" Jashurek who preceded her in death.  
Lennie was a devoted mother and grandmother whose greatest enjoyments in life were her children and grandchildren. She loved going for walks, gardening, scrapbooking, knitting and doing crafts with her grandchildren.

Lady Crusaders beat Lady Wolves for AML title

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader basketball team won the Allegheny Mountain League championship Saturday night at the St. Marys Area High School by edging the Kane Lady Wolves by a 42-39 score.
Elk Catholic was the top team out of the AML North while the Lady Wolves were second in the same division. Kane defeated the top team out of the South Division, DuBois Central, Friday night, while Elk defeated the second team out of the South Division, Curwensville.

Plea made for more school delays for weather

The Kane area, known as the “Icebox of Pennsylvania,” often has significant snowfalls and a wintry mix that create hazardous travel conditions.
The Kane Area School District, however, annually has the fewest “snow days” and “two-hour delays” among all schools in the region.

Claude A. “Cork” Olson

Claude A. “Cork” Olson, 83, of 626 Greendale Rd., Kane, died Wednesday evening, Feb. 13, 2013 at Florida Hospital - Orlando in Orlando, Fla.
Born Nov. 25, 1929 in Kane, he was the son of Claude E. and Gladys M. Christjohn Olson. On Dec. 25, 1950 in Kane, he married Eleanor L. Aljoe, who died Feb. 1, 2003.
Mr. Olson was an oil and gas inspector for the Pennsylvania DEP for 25 years. Later he owned and operated Olson Drilling in Kane. He was also a member of the NRA.

Lady Wolves advance to AML championship game tonight

The Kane Lady Wolves defeated DuBois Central Catholic 49-39 on DCC’s home court Friday night in an Allegheny Mountain League [AML] semifinal game. The Lady Wolves played good team defense and had a big night from Audrey Perry helping them advance to tonight’s AML championship game.

Seventh and eighth grade teams finish season

The Kane seventh and eighth grade boys’ basketball team recently finished their season. The teams worked hard throughout the season and were involved in many close games.

General Kane chapel sustains water damage

There is major water damage inside the historic General Thomas Kane Memorial Chapel at 30 Chestnut St. in the borough.
Vandals are blamed for turning off gas heat to the building. The lack of heat caused heating system water lines to freeze and rupture.

Lois E. Eckstrom

Lois E. Eckstrom, 69, of 319 Haines St., passed away Friday, Feb. 15, 2013 at UPMC Hamot in Erie.
Born May 17, 1943, in Port Allegany, she was a daughter of  the late James and Mary Peno Dunbar.
Mrs. Eckstrom was an elementary school teacher in the Kane Area School District. Most of her teaching years were in Kane but she also taught in Mt. Jewett for a few years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Kane.
Much of Mrs. Eckstrom's time was spent doing volunteer work, especially at the Lutheran Home at Kane where she also served on the board.

Kane wrestling earns road victory over Ridgway

RIDGWAY – Kane wrestling won 41-27 over Ridgway in a dual meet held Thursday night at Ridgway Area High School.
The Wolves made their seven match wins count, earning maximum points in six of them with four forfeits and two pinfalls. The Wolves also earned a technical fall.

Wolves drop season finale to Gators

February 15, 2013

The Port Allegany Gators came to town on Thursday night to close out the Wolves’ season in a game postponed from early December. The Wolves led early but the Gators outscored the home team down the stretch to take the win, 54-48, ending Kane’s season at 7-15.
