Kane High sports fans have been treated to some fantastic finishes this week by the Kane winter sportsâ€™ athletes.
The Wolves wrestling team clinched the showdown with Smethport on Tuesday in the final match of the night. The Kane girlsâ€™ basketball team defeated rival Johnsonburg on Wednesday night in overtime.
JOHNSONBURG â€“ Area firefighters responded to a fire shortly after 12:30 a.m. early Friday morning in the 200 block of Blaine Avenue in Johnsonburg.
The call came in at 12:33 a.m. to 204 Blaine Ave., a residence situated on a borough road running parallel to the state Route 219 bypass.
Elk Company 2 (Johnsonburg) and St. Marys Ambulance were called at 12:33 a.m.; Elk Company 1 (Crystal Fire Department out of St. Marys), Elk Company 4 (Ridgway), Elk Company 6 (Wilcox) were called out at 12:44 a.m., and Elk Company 5 (Jay Township) responded at 1 a.m.
For now, the Kane borough budget for 2014 carries the same tax rate as the past two years.
There are indications, however, that the rate might be adjusted if attempts to "re-visit" the budget come to fruition next month.
MT. JEWETT â€“ The final 2014 budget for Mt. Jewett carries a half-mill increase in the tax rate.
The boost raises the Mt. Jewett tax rate to 8.25 mills. This means taxpayers will pay $8.25 for every $1,000 in assessed property valuation.
LAFAYETTE TWP. â€“ A Jewett, Ohio man died early Thursday morning in a two-vehicle crash on state Route 219 at the Sand Road intersection, approximately half a mile north of its intersection with state Route 59.
The St. Marys City Police Department reports investigating a two-vehicle collision that occurred on Wednesday, Dec. 18, at approximately 10:10 p.m. on SR 255/S. St. Marys Street near Jeep Road.
Police report that a 2013 BMW sedan, operated by Shanti Raju, 34, of St. Marys, was traveling northbound in the right lane. A 2012 Chevrolet pickup truck, operated by James Dunshie, 26, of Force was traveling northbound in the left lane.
The Kane Wolves wrestling team traveled to Smethport on Tuesday to take on the Hubbers in a battle between two of the AMLâ€™s top teams. The outcome wasnâ€™t decided until the final match of the night, when Kane senior Nate Moore bumped up to wrestle at 220 pounds and pinned his opponent to give Kane coach Mike Swartwoodâ€™s Wolves a hard-fought 39-32 win.
Emergency dispatchers reported a vehicle over an embankment late Wednesday night in St. Marys on state Route 255 off the northbound lane. Initial reports indicated there was entrapment with open wounds, and a STAT MedEvac helicopter responded to the scene as the highway was closed down. A second chopper was reportedly ordered to be on standby at the hospital and a PennDOT supervisor was called to the crash scene. Elk Company 1 and 3, along with St. Marys Ambulance and Elkland Search and Rescue responded to the crash. No further information was available.
The Kane Lady Wolves and Johnsonburg Ramettes played one of their usual barn burners on Wednesday night in the Wolvesâ€™ Den. After four quarters of regulation and a four-minute overtime period, the Lady Wolves came away with a hard fought 59-57 win in a game that was a make-up game from Saturday nightâ€™s Coudersport Tournament consolation game.

This terse comment from Kane District Court Judge David Engman came Wednesday after his action that transfers Kathleen S. Douglas to the McKean County Jail.
Douglas, 37, of Kane is charged with manslaughter as an alleged drug-influenced driver in a horrific six-fatality traffic accident Aug. 31 near Lantz Corners.
