Pennsylvania's elk herd draws thousands of visitors to the area each year, many of whom come bearing their cameras in hopes of leaving with photographs of the creatures to document their time in Elk Country. Now those who may not have had much luck getting their own photos can instead take home a new book featuring a variety of photos of the animals.
I am writing this on a very cold, blustery day just before Thanksgiving. I was out early this very morning in a rather calm, partly sunny beginning of the day. The Elk County Holiday Basketball Tournament will undergo a number of exciting changes this year as it becomes the EQT Energy Classic Elk County Holiday Tournament; however, one important element of the annual event will be continuing in a modified capacity.
The annual Coaches vs. Cancer campaign has been held during the tournament for a number of years, and has become a favorite of attendees as it has grown to include a competition to decide the favorite boys' and girls' coach each year and has also provided the opportunity for a lucky fan to leave with a basketball signed by all of the members of the girls' or boys' teams.
John J. "Jay" Carlson, 79, formerly of 418 Park Ave, Kane, died Saturday, Dec. 21, 2013 at Transitions HealthcareÂ Autumn Grove in Harrisville.
Born March 9, 1934, in Kane, he was a son of J. Walter and Natalie Kempf Carlson. On May 1, 1954, in Kane, he married Shirley A. Williams who preceded him in death on Jan. 3, 1999.
