Part-time secretary job is created at county jail

SMETHPORT – A part-time position of secretary has been created at the McKean County Jail near Smethport.
The McKean County Board of Commissioners voted 2-1 earlier this month to create the position at the rate of $11 per hour.

VFW aids Kane Senior Center

Victor H. Peterson

Victor H. Peterson, age 92, of Lantz Corners, formerly of Kushequa, passed away at home unexpectedly Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013. 
He was born May 14, 1920, in Bradford, son of the late Ivan and Beda Samuelson Peterson. On Aug. 16, 1947, he married Joyce V. Martinson in the Kushequa Union Church. 

Anthony G. Haulik

Anthony G. Haulik, 87, of 100 High Point Dr., passed away Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013 at Kane Community Hospital.
Born Jan. 30, 1925, in James City, he was a son of the late Joseph and Marie Urban Haulik. On Jan. 25, 1949, in Kane, he married Carol Leoffler who preceded him in death.
Mr. Haulik had worked as a credit manager for the Sarasota Herald Tribune in Florida where he had previously resided. He belonged to the D.A.V. and St. Callistus Catholic Church and was a past member of the Kane Elks Lodge.
He served with the U.S. Army during World War II, attaining the rank of Tec 5.

Lady Wolves escape with 55-48 win over Sheffield

The Kane Lady Wolves’ basketball team improved to 13-3 on the season with a win over Sheffield on Friday night in the Wolves’ Den, but it wasn’t easy. The visitors led for most of the first three quarters of the contest before Kane erased a big deficit in the third and converted six of six free throws in the final minute to seal the win.

Kane judge takes tough stance on truancy

State compulsory education laws require children to attend school until they're 17.
Skipping school is not tolerated in the Kane Area School District.
School officials regularly file truancy cases with Kane District Court Judge Dave Engman. And Engman takes a tough stance on the truancy cases.

Charles E. Rolfe Jr.

Charles E. Rolfe, Jr., 57, of 17262 Kevin Dr., Meadville, formerly of Kane, passed away Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013 at Meadville Medical Center.
Born Nov. 27, 1955,  he was a son of Charles E. and Ann Zuzek Rolfe Sr. On Sept. 20, 1986, in Meadville, he married Kelly S. Weidow who survives.
Charles was a State Police officer and was a corporal at the time of his retirement in 2010 at Meadville. He had also been stationed at various times  at Clarion, Franklin, Washington and Mt. Jewett.

Marilyn O. Brinkley

Marilyn O. Brinkley, 69, of 113 Haines St., Kane, died Thursday evening, Jan. 24, 2013 at the Kane Community Hospital.
Born March 18, 1943 in Kane, she was the daughter of Howard D. and Ellen I. Anderson Hannold. On Aug. 11, 1962 in Kane, she married Thomas E. Brinkley, who survives.
Mrs. Brinkley had worked at Houston Electronics in Kane, then later for the Arcade Restaurant and the Shady Point Restaurant, both in Kane, as a short-order cook, retiring from the latter in 2005.
A member of St. Callistus Catholic Church in Kane, she enjoyed Bingo, slot machines and doing computer puzzles.

Wolves roll over Tide 63-45 in D9 AA matchup

The Kane Wolves boys’ basketball team made the long trek to Curwensville on Wednesday night in a makeup game from early in the season. The trip was worth it as the varsity Wolves used big second and third quarters to propel them to a 63-45 win while Kane’s junior varsity team won a thriller 34-33.

90 dead and dying trees cut at Evergreen Park

Concern has been expressed for years about the number of diseased trees in Evergreen Park in Kane.
The borough annually tried to remove one or two dead trees from the largest park in Kane. However, limited funds have kept the borough from undertaking a major project to remove diseased trees, which present a significant danger to park-users.
