Edith E. Mosier

May 28, 2012

Edith E. Mosier, 97, of 525 Flickerwood Rd., Kane, passed away Sunday, May 27, 2012, at the Lutheran Home at Kane.
Born March 10, 1915, in Morrison, she was a daughter of John and Natalina Badiali Avenali. On June 24, 1935, in Allegany, N.Y., she married Jacob "Jake" Mosier who preceded her in death after 58 years of marriage.
Mrs. Mosier graduated as valedictorian from Kinzua High School in 1931 at the age of 16. As a full-time homemaker, she was a devoted wife, a dedicated mother, an excellent cook and an avid gardener. She had previously worked for a time at Sylvania in Emporium.

Mary L. Magnuson

Mary L. Magnuson, 90, formerly of 10 Pine Ave., Kane, died early Monday morning, May 28, 2012 at The Lutheran Home at Kane.
Born Aug. 10, 1921 in Kane, she was the daughter of Elno E. and Mattie E. Tate Johnson. On March 12, 1943 in Kane, she married David E. Magnuson, who died in 1988.
Mrs. Magnuson was a bookkeeper for the former Kane Federal Savings & Loan for over 25 years. She was a member of and very active at the First Baptist Church in Kane, where she served as the church's secretary in the 1950s and was treasurer for many years.

William R. Besecker

William R. Besecker, 92, of 130 Bayard St., Kane, died Saturday morning, May 26, 2012 at the Kane Community Hospital.
Born May 14, 1920, he was the son of Edward and Margaret Jackson Besecker. In March of 1945, he married Evelyn B. Tinson, who died in 2000.
Besides his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.
Mr. Besecker served in the U.S. Army during WWII, and later worked at Kane Hardwood as a supervisor for 20 years.
He was a member of Kane Lodge #566 F&AM and was a lifetime member of McKean County Chapter #72 of the D.A.V.

Charles Edward Bonini

Charles Edward Bonini, age 81, of Franklinville, N.Y., of Route 16 died Friday, May 25, 2012, at the Pines in Machias following a long illness.
Born Aug. 2, 1930 in Kane, he was the son of William Bonini and Evelyn Lindblade. In 1954 he married Ray Etta Willman; she predeceased him in 1963. On Nov 23, 1963 in Bradford, he married Barbara Anderson, who survives.

Memorial Day speaker salutes Ken VanGiesen

In a stirring Memorial Day address Monday in Kane, State Rep. Kathy Rapp (R-Warren) saluted Staff Sgt. Kenneth R. VanGiesen.
The Kane native was killed last July while serving in Afghanistan with the Pennsylvania Army National Guard.
Rapp pointed out that VanGiesen was “serving on his fourth active tour of overseas duty.”
The 1999 graduate of Kane Area High School previously served in Germany and twice in Iraq “logging a total of 1,400 mobilized days in overseas deployment,” Rapp said.

Large crowd attends Memorial Day service in Ludlow

LUDLOW – Featuring sunny skies and hot, humid weather, the annual Ludlow Memorial Day program was held Monday at the Gibbs Hill Cemetery.
A large crowd attended the event, which included the singing of “God Bless America,” the “Battle Hymn of the Republic” and the “Star Spangled Banner.” Georgi Rice led the singing of the patriotic songs.
The Rev. Dennis Johnson was the speaker for the program. He is the pastor of the Sheffield and Barnes United Methodist Church.
In his address, Johnson recited “In Flanders Field,” which he called “one of the most popular and most quoted war poems.”

Bierbower addresses community in Mt. Jewett

MT. JEWETT – Christopher Bierbower, SSgt United States Army Infantry was the keynote speaker for the Mt. Jewett Memorial Day Program which was held immediately after the parade. After being introduced by Master of Ceremonies SSgt Kevin Kost, Bierbower gave thanks to Patrick Eaton Commander of VFW Post 6347 and everyone for coming out to help honor all the brave men and women past and present who served our country.

Speaker named for Kane Memorial Day event

State Rep. Kathy Rapp (R-Warren) will speak Monday at the annual Memorial Day program in Kane.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and American Legion posts in Kane are sponsoring the Memorial Day activities, which features a parade at 9:30 a.m. Monday.
The parade forms at 9 a.m. on Wetmore Avenue and proceeds south on Fraley Street to the “point” area of Evergreen Park at Chestnut, Birch and Fraley streets.
"I'm always honored to be asked to speak to honor our veterans for all their sacrifices," Rapp said Friday.

State probe is critical of Kane school chief

A state investigation is highly critical of Kane School District Superintendent Dr. Maryann Anderson when she served as supervisor of Special Services for the Millcreek Township School District near Erie.
According to the report issued last week by State Auditor General Jack Wagner:
*Anderson as supervisor of Special Services "diverted $91,873 from the district's special education program by purchasing gift cards with special education funds and using the gift cards for non-program purposes."

Woman is jailed for theft from pre-school

SMETHPORT – A Kane woman will spend a week in the McKean County Jail for stealing money from the Kane Day School while she was serving as the board treasurer.
Ashley Nichole Wilson, 26, of 615 Maple St., Kane, broke down in tears Thursday after McKean County President Judge John Pavlock handed down a sentence that calls for incarceration.
Under the sentence, Wilson will spend between "7 days to one year" in the jail on Route 6 near Smethport.
In a week, she is expected to be released on parole that will last a year. Then she will go on probation for two years, the judge ruled.
