Donald Chittester

June 10, 2012

Donald Chittester, 84, of 43 Brickyard Rd., passed away Saturday, June 9, 2012, at Heinz V.A. Hospital in Aspinwall.
Born April 12, 1928, in Brandy Camp, he was a son of Oran and Nellie Daugherty Chittester.
Mr. Chittester had been employed as a truck driver for Kane Manufacturing and also  had been previously  employed as a driver for JB Hunt. In addition,he had taught truck driving at Dublin Tech College in Georgia and had worked for the California Forestry Service.
Don was the present Commander of King David VFW Post 1132 in Kane and had served in the U.S. Navy, retiring as a Seabee.

Diplomas awarded at 122nd Kane High commencement

Diplomas were awarded Friday to 60 graduating seniors at the 122nd commencement for Kane High School.
The program at the packed high school auditorium featured the presentation of more than $80,000 in scholarships.
State Senior Judge John Cleland, a 1965 Kane High graduate who has lived in Kane most of his life, delivered the commencement address.
In his remarks, entitled “Unfinished Business,” Cleland told the graduates they are “lucky to have grown up in a small town.”

LaVerta M."Bootsie" Rose

LaVerta M."Bootsie" Rose, 85, formerly of 3 Southgate Rd., passed away Friday, June 8, 2012, at the Bradford Manor.
Born in Russell City on Aug. 23, 1926 she was a daughter of the late Emanuel and Reba (Clawges) Cunningham.
On Feb. 24, 1949 in Kane, she married Francis G. Rose, who died on February 23, 2010.
Mrs. Rose attended Bradford schools. She had worked for many years as a waitress at the Emery Hotel and DeSoto Holiday House. She later worked at AirCo. Speers and and prior to her retirement at Top's Market's in the deli department.

Carl Melvin Davidson

Carl Melvin Davidson, 87, loving husband of Susan Jane Landfair Davidson, of 207 Amethyst Way, Seneca, S.C., died Thursday, June 7, 2012 at Cottingham Hospice House of Seneca, S.C.
A native of Kane, Mr. Davidson was the son of the late Hugh and Margaret Brigger Davidson. He was a veteran of the US Navy Amphibious Force where he took part in the D-Day landings on Omaha Beach during WWII.

Bob "Robert" Carl Whippo

June 7, 2012

Bob "Robert" Car Whippo, 70, of Tucson and formally of Kane, went to be with the Lord on May 16, 2012.
Born Aug. 27, 1941 in Kane, he was the son of the late Carl Whippo and Louise Deemer. He was a 1959 graduate of Kane Area High School. He served in the USAF for four years. He had varied jobs throughout his life and finally retired several years ago.

Tom Cecchetti is ending Kane teaching career

Tom Cecchetti may be ending a 36-year career as a popular physical education teacher in Kane, but he isn’t quite ready to give up coaching track.
“I plan on being the boys’ track coach again next spring,” Cecchetti said as he winds up his career as a high school teacher and school district athletic director.
“I still have that passion to watch our kids excel,” he said. “I love to watch our kids progress. I’m definitely hooked.”
Cecchetti has built a reputation as one the most successful high school track coaches in Pennsylvania.

School chief responds to state allegations

Unfavorably cited in a report by the state Auditor General, Kane School Superintendent Dr. Maryann Anderson is ready and willing to give her side of the story.
According to the “findings” in the report issued last month by state Auditor General Jack Wagner:
The “former supervisor of special services” for the Millcreek Township School District near Erie “diverted $91,873 from the district’s special education program by purchasing gift cards with special education funds and using the gift cards for non-program purposes.”

Zoning board clears way for sale of former school

The Kane Zoning Hearing Board has cleared the way for the sale of the former Chestnut Street Elementary School to Kane Manufacturing.
Acting at a meeting Wednesday, the board approved a "special exception for 'mixed use'" at the former school.
Ed Peterson, chairman of the board, voted in favor of the request along with Vice Chairman Joe Stauffer and board member Todd Klaiber.
Norm Schreckengost and Diane Niklas, two other board members, did not attend the meeting. Mike Woods, listed as an alternate member, also was absent.

Judy M. Reigel

June 6, 2012

Judy M. Reigel, 64, of 40 Delaware Ave. in James City, died Wednesday morning, June 6, 2012 at the Kane Community Hospital.
Born April 27, 1948 in Buckhannon, W.Va., she was the daughter of Egbert T. and Virgie D. Depoy Farnsworth. On April 29, 1967 in James City, she married Robert M. Reigel, who survives.

Kane to hire company to handle sewer bills

June 5, 2012

The borough of Kane plans to hire a private company to handle sewer bills.
Acting at its meeting Tuesday, the Kane Borough Council took preliminary action to appoint the Pennsylvania Municipal Service Company (PAMS) to issue and collect sewer bills.
The Pennsylvania American Water Company, which serves Kane with water, has been handling the sewer bills.
But the company later this year plans to end its role for billings other than for water for its entire service area, including Kane.
