Lady Wolves win silver bracket of West Branch Tournament

September 16, 2012

MORRISDALE – The Kane Lady Wolves volleyball team traveled to Morrisdale to take part in Saturday’s West Branch Tournament. The Lady Wolves finished with a 4-4 record in the round robin portion of the tournament, sending them to the silver bracket pool for the playoffs. Kane then won both rounds of that playoff pool.

Thelma L. Johnson, 80, of 290 Burdick Lane, Kane, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, Sept. 10, 2012, at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, Fayetteville, N.C.
Thelma was born in Commodore, PA, on Nov. 14, 1931, the daughter of the late Mead and Lola Ludwig. Thelma graduated from Johnstown Central High School in the class of 1949. She was a member of Tabor Lutheran Church where she served in many capacities including Sunday School Teacher, Funeral Committee, Lucia Committee and Lydia Circle.

Julia E. “Judy” Bressler

Julia E. “Judy” Bressler, 93, formerly of Johnsonburg, passed away Saturday, Sept. 15, 2012, at the Lutheran Home at Kane where she had been a resident since 1996.
Born March 3, 1919, in Renova, she was a daughter of the late LeRoy F. and Emma Stewart Bressler.
Miss Bressler lived most of her life in Johnsonburg and was a member of the Methodist Church there and had worked for the Stackpole Corporation until her retirement in 1970. She was also a member of the D.A.R.

Wolves’ big second quarter leads to win over Terrors

DUKE CENTER – The Kane Wolves’ football team exploded for twenty points in the second quarter against Otto-Eldred on Friday night in Duke Center. The Wolves would go on to post a 48-8 victory, improving their record to 2-1 on the season.

Wolves look to rebound against Terror

September 13, 2012

The Kane Wolves’ football team will try to rebound Friday from last week’s 46-13 loss at the hands of the Port Allegany Gators.
The Wolves will play Otto-Eldred on the road Friday night in Duke Center.
The Terrors are coached by Virgil Graham, now in his third year at the helm. Local football fans may remember the name. He is the same Virgil Graham that set the record for touchdowns scored in the Don Raabe Big 30 Classic back in 2005, with five. Graham’s teams were 2-8 each of the past two years, but the young coach is optimistic about this year’s squad.

Lady Wolves rally to beat Wolverines

The Kane Lady Wolves volleyball team trailed host Sheffield two games to one before rallying to take the final two games of the best of five match on Thursday night.
According to Kane head varsity volleyball coach Judy Kessler, both teams played their best matches of the season.

Report shows increase in Kane school enrollment

The Kane area population is dropping, but school enrollment is on the rise.
According to a report to the Kane School Board, third-day enrollment in the district totaled 1,230 students. This is an increase of 20 over the same reporting period in 2011.

Lady Wolves soccer drops 5-3 decision to Smethport

The Kane girls’ soccer team played some very good soccer during Wednesday’s contest against Smethport.
Unfortunately, they did not play consistently good soccer for long periods of time during the game, and wound up on the losing end of a 5-3 score.
The Lady Wolves started out strong, with the bulk of the early action taking place in front of the Smethport goal. Taylor Bucheit got Kane’s first decent scoring opportunity when Shyanne Todd cleared a ball nearly the length of the field and Bucheit caught up with it before the goalie could make a stop.

Kinzua Bridge festival is slated Saturday and Sunday

MT. JEWETT – Large crowds are expected Saturday and Sunday for the 17th fall festival at the Kinzua Bridge State Park near Mt. Jewett.
The festival runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days, rain or shine. Admission is free.
There are 55 craft vendors and 13 food vendors ready to set up at the park. There are activities and displays.
“This festival now holds the record for the largest number of food and craft vendors at the event,” Debbie Lunden said. “There will be plenty to see and do. We have many, many arts and crafts vendors, a great variety of food and musical entertainment.”

Marcel Charles Lang Jr., 84, formerly of Whispering Oaks, Hermitage, Warren, and Mt. Jewett, passed away at 3:15 p.m. Monday, Sept. 10, 2012, in Orange Village Care Center, Masury, Ohio.
