Dave Engman of Kane won the Democratic and Republican nomination for Kane District Court judge in the May primary and is the only candidate lisedt on the ballot for the election next Tuesday.
However, Kane Borough Police Chief Brian Hillard recently announced that he is challenging Engman as a write-in candidate.
The two candidates are seeking the position formerly held by Michael Kennedy, who retired for health reasons last year and died earlier this month. Michael Fedora has been serving as acting district judge for more than a year.
No reading textbook to carry home from school every day?
Under a new reading program at the Kane Elementary School, students can â€śread anything they wantâ€ť when they go home as long as they read, Principal Linda Lorenzo said.
She said the students are directed to read books, magazines or newspapers for â€śat least 20 minutesâ€ť at home each day after school. When theyâ€™re finished reading, students are expected to discuss what theyâ€™ve read with a parent or an older sibling.
Gertrude C. Frey Sleeman, 92, of Youngsville, and formerly a resident of Clarendon, passed away on Monday, Oct. 31, 2011 at the Rouse Warren County Home.
MT. JEWETT â€“ A large crowd gathered Monday evening at the Mt. Jewett Fire Hall for the annual Halloween Costume Contest.
Prizes were awarded for first, second and third in nine categories.
The Mt. Jewett Rotary Club sponsored the contest. Rotary also sponsored the Halloween parade prior to the contest. "Trick or Treat" time followed the contest.
Judges for the contest included Lea Earley, a Mt. Jewett resident who is the reigning Miss Kane High; Barb Harp, borough secretary-treasurer; and Christine Park, secretary-treasurer for the borough water department.
Gertrude C. Sleeman, 92, of 701 Rouse Ave., Youngsville, and formerly of Clarendon, passed away on Monday, Oct. 31, 2011 at the Rouse Home.

George Preston Simon Jr., 92, a former resident of Perry County for 35 years and currently of Chapel Pointe, Carlisle, died on Monday, Oct. 24, 2011 in the Carlisle Regional Medical Center.
He was born April 14, 1919 in Mt. Jewett, to the late George P. and Bertha Rathburn Simon.
Janis M. Sample, 53, of 148 School St., Kane, and formerly of Wilcox, died on Monday, Oct. 31, 2011 at Kane Community Hospital following a brief illness.
She was born on August 19, 1958 in Ridgway, daughter of Thomas J. and Dorothy Dush Redmond.
She married Jeffrey A. Sample on May 14, 1982. He survives.
She resided in Kane for the last 22 years. She graduated from Johnsonburg Area High School, Class of 1976 and from Median Technical School of Pittsburgh as an Animal Health Tech. She was employed by Kinzua Veterinary Clinic in Warren for 10 years.
Robert Loyd Lankard, 86, of Meadville, passed away, Saturday, Oct. 29, 2011, at the Meadville Medical Center after a three-month period of failing health.
Born Nov. 20, 1924 in Harris, Kansas, he was the son of Jasper and Minnie Milliman Lankard.Â He married Beverly R. Witherell on Dec. 16, 1973 at the Kane Baptist Church.Â
Judith E. Lang, 96, formerly of JoJo Road, Kane, died Friday evening, Oct. 28, 2011 at The Lutheran Home at Kane.
Born Nov. 22, 1914 in Suffolk, Va., she was the daughter of Francis M. and Bernice C. Butler Pierce.Â On Aug. 23, 1943 in Fort Story, Va., she married Donald W. Lang, Jr., who died in 2003.
Mrs. Lang served in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps during WWII at Walter Reed Hospital and Woodrow Wilson General Hospital. Later, she was the school nurse at Sheffield High School and worked at the Summit Hospital and Community Hospital, both in Kane.
Gladys E. â€śRustyâ€ť Johnston, 86, of 15 W. Willow St., Smethport, formerly of Mt. Jewett, died Saturday, Oct. 29, 2011, at Kane Community Hospital.
Born Jan. 24, 1925, in Ridgway, she was a daughter of the late Edward and Alta Van Order Moran.Â On Dec. 9, 1945, in Kane,Â she married Richard Johnston who preceded her in death.
Mrs. Johnston is survived by a daughter, Kathleen â€śKittieâ€ť (Jim) McCormack of Mt. Jewett; two grandsons, Chris (Miriam) McCormack of Pittsburgh and Jay (Marcie Srun) McCormack of Moscow, Idaho; and five great-grandchildren, Wren, Jayne, Sunny, Claire and Kacey McCormack.
