I was now awakening to my first full day in Katmai National Park in southwestern Alaska. I had finally seen some monster Alaskan brown bears in their natural habitat. The weather had held out, being cool and very comfortable with temperatures in the high 60s and low 70s. I was enjoying Mother Natureâ€™s air conditioning, unaware of the near 100-degree temperatures both in Kane and in the lower 48 for July 2011.
The 4-year-olds at Kane Community Preschool were surprised by a visit with Santa.Â Santa delivered presents to the kids for being such good boys and girls all year.
Eleven acts entertained the students and faculty of the Kane Middle School at Fridayâ€™s talent show. The show was hosted by KAMS students Connor Crowley and Madison Selan, who kept the crowd laughing between acts.
Allen T. "Tommy" Walker Sr., 84, of 14315 Wilcox Rd., Clermont, passed away Thursday, Dec. 20, 2012, at UPMC Hamot in Erie.
Born Jan. 2, 1928, in Emporium, he was a son of Thomas and Lillian Dalrymple Walker. On Sept. 11, 1947, in Girard, he married Dollie Finn who preceded him in death.
Frank B. Harris, 71, of 130 Greeves St. in Kane, died Thursday, Dec. 20, 2012 at Sena Kean Manor in Smethport, where he recently resided.
Born May 15, 1941 in Buffalo, N.Y., he was the son of Henry and Bonnie Herron Harris. A peacetime veteran of the U.S. Army, he was also an avid model car collector.
Surviving are two daughters, Amy Mills and Holly Harris, both of Kane; a granddaughter Emily Hipolito in Kane; a brother, Tom Harris of Kent, Ohio; nephews Jason and Justin Harris; and his former wife, Linda Harris.

This past Saturday, 19 of Kaneâ€™s JO Wrestlers traveled to compete at Salamanca, N.Y. The team went up against wrestlers from Erie, Gowanda, Coudersport, Olean, and Hornell, to name a few. Kane took the second-place team trophy as well as earned individually, six first-place trophies, one second-place trophy, three third-place trophies, and two fourth-place trophies. The JO wrestlerâ€™s will be in Shinglehouse Dec. 29.
The Kane Lady Wolvesâ€™ basketball team defeated a scrappy Port Allegany squad on Wednesday night in the Wolvesâ€™ Den. The Wolves used solid play from their post players to pull away in the second half and move to 4-1 on the season with the 60-36 win.
MT. JEWETT â€“ The Mt. Jewett Borough Council voted 4-0 Wednesday to seek a grant to upgrade the East End Pump Station.
