Becky Christian is retiring as Kane teacher

Becky Christian can thank her husband’s passion for the outdoors for leading her to Kane where she’s had a 36-year teaching career.
Because he enjoyed hunting and fishing, Christian applied for a teaching job in Kane after graduating from Thiel College in 1976.
A native of Beaver near Pittsburgh, Christian said she had “never heard of Kane” before coming here for her first job interview after college graduation.
She learned the “next day” that she had been offered the job of kindergarten teacher at the former Clay Street Elementary School in Kane.

M. Althea Weilacher

M. Althea Weilacher, 98, formerly of Owl's Nest and Yarnall Street in Kane, died late Friday evening, June 1, 2012 at Elk Haven Nursing Home in St. Marys.
Born Jan. 16, 1914 in Masten, she was the daughter of Domer R. and Beatrice A. Danley Derr. On Aug. 30, 1931 in Clarendon, she married Daniel E. Weilacher, who died in 1973.
Mrs. Weilacher was a nurse's aide for several years at the Kane Community Hospital, then later worked at Stackpole in Kane, also for several years.

James E. Brinkley

James E. Brinkley, 88, a resident of The Lutheran Home at Kane, formerly of Smithfield Avenue, Kane, died early Friday morning, June 1, 2012 at the Kane Community Hospital.
Born May 16, 1924 in Sigel, he was the son of Conrad and Mary Cyphert Brinkley. On May 10, 1952 in Ridgway, he married Donna M. Nearing, who died in 2009.
Mr. Brinkley was Army sergeant in the 5th infantry during WWII, having served three years in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre, three years in Italy, and also in Okinawa.  Later, he worked at Stackpole in Kane for 28 years, retiring in 1986.

Sue Grolemund to end long teaching career

Sue Grolemund, a Kane native, is wrapping up a 37-year career as an elementary school teacher in her hometown.
"After all these years, I still love what I'm doing," Grolemund said in reflecting on her long career as an educator of young children. "I've had a rewarding experience every day. I'm going to miss the kids and my peers."
Grolemund is the daughter of the late Clair and Jane McNeill of Kane. She has two brothers-- Larry of Kane and Dan of New Jersey-- and one sister-- Lori Wilson of Vermont.

Irene Oddy Houpt

Irene Oddy Houpt, 94, of  Allegheny Forest area passed away Wednesday, May 30, 2012, at her residence.
Born June 28, 1917, in West Cowick, U.K., she was a daughter of Ben Ross and Beatrice Griscom Mercer Oddy. In 1969, in Philadelphia, she married Raul R. Houpt who preceded her in death.
Mrs. Houpt had been an administrative secretary for the British Consulate in Pittsburgh. She also had been employed by Walter H. Eagan, Co. Inc., Smith Koch, Co. Inc., Franklin Institute Research Center and Arvin Calspan, Inc. all in Philadelphia

Gold Star Mother endures first Memorial Day

May has been an emotional month for Sue VanGiesen whose son, Kenneth, was killed last July while serving in Afghanistan with the Pennsylvania Army National Guard.
First there was Mother's Day.
Next, the Kane woman and her family were invited guests at a memorial service May 20 at the Pennsylvania Military Museum in Boalsburg. Gov. Tom Corbett spoke at the ceremony held by the Guard's 28th Infantry Division.
Then came Memorial Day earlier this week.
"Memorial Day brought back a lot of feelings and thoughts," Sue said with tears in her eyes. "It's not getting easier."

Prizes awarded at Middle School Talent Show

Prizes totaling $85 were awarded Tuesday in the Kane Middle School Talent Show at the school auditorium.
Olivia Blackmore, a seventh-grader, won the first-place prize of $50.
She sang the song "Arms" by Christina Perri and received a standing ovation.
Kendall Watts, a sixth-grader, received $25 for second place. She performed on the piano.
Marcie Stanisch and Sadie Tunall, both seventh-graders, received the $10 third-place prize. Together they performed a dance routine.

Edith E. Mosier

May 28, 2012

Edith E. Mosier, 97, of 525 Flickerwood Rd., Kane, passed away Sunday, May 27, 2012, at the Lutheran Home at Kane.
Born March 10, 1915, in Morrison, she was a daughter of John and Natalina Badiali Avenali. On June 24, 1935, in Allegany, N.Y., she married Jacob "Jake" Mosier who preceded her in death after 58 years of marriage.
Mrs. Mosier graduated as valedictorian from Kinzua High School in 1931 at the age of 16. As a full-time homemaker, she was a devoted wife, a dedicated mother, an excellent cook and an avid gardener. She had previously worked for a time at Sylvania in Emporium.

Mary L. Magnuson

Mary L. Magnuson, 90, formerly of 10 Pine Ave., Kane, died early Monday morning, May 28, 2012 at The Lutheran Home at Kane.
Born Aug. 10, 1921 in Kane, she was the daughter of Elno E. and Mattie E. Tate Johnson. On March 12, 1943 in Kane, she married David E. Magnuson, who died in 1988.
Mrs. Magnuson was a bookkeeper for the former Kane Federal Savings & Loan for over 25 years. She was a member of and very active at the First Baptist Church in Kane, where she served as the church's secretary in the 1950s and was treasurer for many years.

William R. Besecker

William R. Besecker, 92, of 130 Bayard St., Kane, died Saturday morning, May 26, 2012 at the Kane Community Hospital.
Born May 14, 1920, he was the son of Edward and Margaret Jackson Besecker. In March of 1945, he married Evelyn B. Tinson, who died in 2000.
Besides his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.
Mr. Besecker served in the U.S. Army during WWII, and later worked at Kane Hardwood as a supervisor for 20 years.
He was a member of Kane Lodge #566 F&AM and was a lifetime member of McKean County Chapter #72 of the D.A.V.
