Rotary blood screening program is in 40th year

The Kane Rotary "multi-phasic" blood screening program, which is marking its 40th anniversary this year, diagnoses various medical conditions for Kane area residents.
The health-awareness  program also provides the Rotary Club with funds for its high school scholarships and financial aid to the Friends' Memorial Public Library, the Kane Volunteer Fire Department, the Kane Police Department, the Kane Community Hospital and community projects.

Johnsonburg man sought in Wetmore Twp. theft

A warrant has been issued for the arrest of a Johnsonburg man who is charged in the theft of more than $6,000 in minted coins and currency from a garage in Wetmore Township.
Travis Allen O'Conner, 29, of 338 Water St., Johnsonburg, is charged with theft by unlawful taking or disposition and receiving stolen property, both felonies.
State Police Trooper Michael Britton placed the charges following an investigation of the alleged theft at the Gary Lee Anderson residence in Wetmore Township..

Kane man is charged in burglary at his grandmother's apartment

A Kane man is charged with a burglary at his grandmother's apartment at Central Towers at 130 Greeves St. in the borough.
John D. Morrison, 28, of 7031 Route 6, Kane, also is charged with criminal trespass and unlawful taking or disposition. He is scheduled for arraignment Wednesday before Kane District Court Judge Dave Engman in the case that includes two felony charges.
Kane Borough Police Officer Derrick Snyder filed the charges.

George T. "Tim" Timblin

February 26, 2012

George T. "Tim" Timblin, Jr., 65, of 156 Dewey Ave. in Hazel Hurst, formerly of Marienville for many years, died Saturday evening, Feb. 25, 2012 at the Bradford Manor.
Born Jan. 12, 1947 in Kane, he was the son of George T. and Lucille K. Oliver Timblin.
Mr. Timblin was a machine operator for Highland Resources in Marienville for many years, moving to Hazel Hurst in the past year. He served in both the U.S. Army and the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War.

Luella M. Luck

February 26, 2012

Luella M. Luck, 88, of 430 Elk Ave., Kane, died Friday afternoon, Feb. 24, 2012 at her residence.
Born July 18, 1923 in Johnsonburg, she was the daughter of Every and Elizabeth Yaun Foster. On Oct. 30, 1946 in Ridgway, she married Bernard W. Luck, who survives.

Kane wins bronze in robot car competition

A three-student team from the Kane Middle School has captured third place in robot car competition at the Carnegie Science Center in Pittsburgh.
The team includes Galicia Fryzlewicz, an eighth-grader; her brother, Gunnar Fryzlewicz, a sixth-grader; and Patrick Moore, an eighth-grader.
Each received a bronze medal. The school received a trophy. Kane competed against 10 other schools, mainly from the Pittsburgh area.
The robot car competition earlier this month was part of Engineering Week activities at the Carnegie Science Center.

Marjorie A. Johnston

Marjorie A. Johnston, 85, formerly of Smithfield Avenue, Kane, died late Thursday evening, Feb. 23, 2012 at The Lutheran Home at Kane.
Born Oct. 29, 1926 in East Kane, she was the daughter of Joseph E. and Julia A. Walters Eck. On June 8, 1962 in Kane, she married John E. Johnston, who died in 1992.
Mrs. Johnston was a babysitter in the area for many years.

American Refining Group is a story of success

Pessimism was blowing in the wind in March 1997 when the American Refining Group (ARG) acquired the former Kendall refinery in Bradford.
“Most gave us six months,” former ARG President and Chief Operating Officer Harvey Golubock said Friday.
Just how wrong were those doomsayers?
ARG survived a rough start financially and last year had “our best year ever,” Golubock said. Another “good year” is expected, he said.

Plans under way for auction at former school

Plans are being made to auction off surplus school equipment and other items now housed at the vacant Chestnut Street Elementary School in Kane.
The auction is set to begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 3. Public inspection of the auction items is expected to start about 9 a.m.
Corey Brown is the auctioneer hired by the Kane Area School District to conduct the sale. He is associated with Green Gable Village located on Route 219 in Great Valley, N.Y. just north of Salamanca. Green Gable Village is known as a multi-dealer shop for antiques.

Kane is 'honored' by nomination to national panel

Ken Kane said Thursday that he is "extremely honored" to be nominated for a seat on a newly-formed advisory committee on land management in U.S. national forests.
"I'm honored they would considered me qualified to serve on the committee," Kane said.
A 1977 graduate of Kane Area High School and a Kane borough resident, Kane has served as vice president of Keith Horn, Inc. consulting foresters since 1994.
He has worked for the Kane-based company since 1983,  a year after he graduated from Penn State University with a degree in forestry.
