45 units collected at Red Cross Blood Drive

June 7, 2015

A total of 45 "productive units" of blood were collected at the recent American Red Cross Blood Drive at the First United Methodist Church in Kane.
First-time donors include Markus Hulings, Lisa Hulings and Cam Mealy.
Judith M. Haight of Ludlow is the volunteer chairman of the Red Cross Blood Drive in Kane.

Senior Voice Recital upcoming

These talented vocalists are also seasoned actresses and performers.
Hannah has a rich, powerful alto voice that is always full of emotion. And Anna has a gorgeous soprano voice that is always effortless and pure.

93 receive diplomas at Kane High School commencement

June 6, 2015

A total of 93 seniors received diplomas Friday evening at the 125th commencement ceremony at Kane Area High School.
The highlight was the presentation of nearly $100,000 in college scholarships. The Staff Sgt. Kenneth VanGiesen Patriot Award of $500 each went to 17 graduates who are entering military service. The audience gave the military-bound graduates a standing ovation.

Detsch wins GOP nomination for Highland Supervisor

RIDGWAY – With two Republican candidates for Highland Township supervisor receiving an equal amount of votes in May's primary election, and with only one spot available on the ballot, the Elk County Board of Elections met Friday to determine which of the two Republican candidates would be the party's nominee for supervisor.
After the votes from May's primary election had been tallied, it was determined that there was a tie for the Republican nomination in the race for Highland Township supervisor as Eugene Brown and Mike Detsch each received 24 votes.

Commencement is set for tonight at Kane High School

June 5, 2015

Diplomas will be handed out tonight at the annual commencement ceremony at Kane High School.
A total of 93 seniors are expected to graduate tonight at the 7 p.m. program in the school auditorium.
Between $80,000 and $100,000 in scholarships will be presented at the ceremony. 
A highlight will be the presentation of the Staff Sgt. Kenneth VanGiesen Patriot Award to 17 seniors who are ready to enter military service.

Kane student breaks own record for reading books

Just 13 years old, Madison Lister already is the most prolific reader in the history of the Accelerated Reader (AR) program at the Kane Middle School.
She's simply a fanatic when it comes to reading books.
"I just really love to read," Lister said. "Reading takes you places you really can't go."
Lister just completed the seventh grade at the Kane Middle School by reading her 100th book during the school year.

Tie to be broken in Highland supervisor's race

JAMES CITY – A tie has been declared in the May 19 primary election for the Republican nomination for a six-year term as supervisor in Highland Township.
According to Elk County Director of Elections Kim Frey, Eugene Brown and Mike Detsch, both of James City, each received 24 votes for supervisor in the Republican primary.
Frey said Detsch won at the polling place in James City by a margin of 20-13. She said Brown won at the polling place in Highland, 11-4.

Police seek information on fatal motorcycle accident

LANTZ CORNERS – State Police are seeking public input as they investigate a fatal hit-and-run accident on Route 646 near Cyclone in Keating Township.
Police have recovered a silver Ford R-350 pickup truck that allegedly struck the rear of a Harley Davidson motorcycle at 10:15 p.m. Tuesday.
The collision killed Dakota Lee Heinaman, 20, who reportedly was slowing down on his motorcycle to pull into a residence he shared with his mother, Dawn.

Hale takes over as chief deputy

RIDGWAY – The current head of the Mt. Jewett Police Department has found a whole new meaning to the word “chief.”
After losing full-time status as police chief in Mt. Jewett thanks to a 7-0 council vote that caused Steve Hale to lose his medical benefits in December 2014, Hale is now the chief deputy of the Elk County Sheriff’s Department. He replaces current Sheriff Theresa Merrit, who filled the dual role for seven to eight months.
