School students usually return home daily with books and other educational materials.
Imagine the look on the faces of parents Friday when their first-graders in the Kane Elementary School came home with a tree.
In observance of Arbor Day this month, the McKean County Conservation District sponsored the "My Growing Tree" program Friday at the school.
Every first-grade student at the school received their own Eastern Hemlock seedling to take home and plant. The students also receive a "My Growing Tree" chart to compare their growth with the growth of their tree.

Property-owners in the Kane Area School District now can pay their taxes in three equal installments rather than all at once.
Acting at its meeting Thursday, the Kane School Board authorized the installment plan beginning with taxes due later this year.
In the boroughs of Kane and Mt. Jewett along with Wetmore and Hamilton townships, property-owners can make their installment payments on Sept. 15, Oct. 15 and Nov. 15.
In Highland Township and the Lamont section of Jones Township in Elk County, the installment payments are due Aug. 15, Sept. 15 and Oct. 15.

ST. MARYS – The St. Marys City Police Department reports investigating a two-vehicle crash that occurred on Bucktail Road (SR 120) on Wednesday, April 18, 2012 at 11:15 a.m. that claimed the life of Frederick K. Beck, age 74, of Emporium.
Police report that a 2008 Jeep operated by Beck was traveling westbound on Bucktail Road, approaching a curve in the roadway. A 2002 Freightliner single-unit box truck operated by Michael L. Barr, 57, of Kersey, was traveling eastbound on Bucktail Road approaching the same curve.
It took more than two hours Wednesday to crown the champions in the second annual Spelling Bee at the Kane Middle School auditorium.
Matt Johnson, a fifth-grader from the Johnsonburg Elementary School, took first place in the division for fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade students.
Bobby Rumcik, a third-grader in the Kane Elementary School, won the division for second and third-grade students. He won the same division last year as a second-grader.
Lindsey Kocjancic, a fifth-grade student in Johnsonburg, finished second in the division for fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade students.
Linnea Swanson Johnson, 97, passed into the next life at 7:55 p.m. Tuesday, April 17, 2012, in Warren General Hospital following an extended illness.
She was born April 4, 1915 in Ludlow to the late Oscar Frederick and Alfreda Linnea Bjorkman Swanson.
Virgil W. Campbell, 90, formerly of Brickyard Road in East Kane, died Wednesday afternoon, April 18, 2012 at The Lutheran Home at Kane, where he resided.
Born Jan. 7, 1922 in Kane, he was the son of William and Jessie Orcutt Campbell. In Feb. of 1946 in Mt. Jewett, he married Mary J. Johnson, who died in 1997.
Francis X. “Frank” Straub, 76, of 123 Terrace Rd., St. Marys, died unexpectedly Tuesday, April 17, 2012 at the DuBois Regional Medical Center.
He was born May 2, 1935 in St. Marys, son of the late Frank E. and Marguerite (Peg) Bender Straub.

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders softball team came out of the gate swinging and coupled with a brilliant pitching performance from Taylor Schlimm cruised to a big win over the Kane Lady Wolves.
The visitors got a big lift as leadoff batter Jessie Ginter just cleared the right field fence for a solo home run. The next two batters were retired before Schlimm reached on an error and Lyndsey Trumbull followed with another home run to push the lead to 3-0.
Kane pitcher Kyla Hoag was able to regroup and get the third out with a big strikeout.
The Elk County Catholic Crusader baseball team withstood a four-run first inning by the Kane Wolves Tuesday afternoon at Berwind Park as they rebounded for a 13-7 victory over the Wolves.
Kane jumped out to the 4-0 lead after the top of the first inning. Elk Catholic responded with three runs of their own in the home half of the inning. The Crusaders would score four in the second, five in the third and one in the fourth for a 13-4 lead. Kane scored two in the fifth and one in the seventh making the final score 13-7.
James Milford, 71 of Oceanside, Calif., passed away April 10, 2012 after an extended illness.Â
Jim was born Oct. 9, 1940 to the late Mark and Theresa Milford of Kane. He has resided in California since 1960. Jim was a 1958 graduate of Kane High School. Jim was employed at Rohr Industries in Chula Vista for 37 years.
Jim enjoyed casinos, bingo and traveling across the United States and visiting friends and family.
