A crowd estimated at more than 300 attended the annual Memorial Day program Monday at the memorial point at Evergreen Park in Kane.
LUDLOW â€“ Six veterans who died in the past year were honored Monday at the Memorial Day service at the Gibbs Hill Cemetery near Ludlow.
The departed veterans include John Straneva, Nicholas Juban, Chester Swanson, Eugene Rzodkiewicz and Virgil Nelson.
MT. JEWETT â€“ The street across from the Veteranâ€™s gazebo in downtown Mt Jewett was crowded with people out to honor servicemen and women, both past and present, during Mondayâ€™s Veteranâ€™s Day Parade. The crowds enjoyed sunny skies and warm temperatures as they watch the ten minute parade and the ceremony that followed.
Former Kane teacher and Wolves Head Football Coach Richard â€śDickâ€ť Smith will be inducted into the Kane All Sports Boosters Hall of Fame tomorrow night at the organizationâ€™s annual awards ceremony.
RIDGWAY â€“ Preliminary reports indicate at least one person is dead after an accident on the Clarion River in the Portland Mills area.
Emergency responders were called to the vicinity of 35080 Portland Mills Rd. in Ridgway Township for an initial report of five individuals in the water, including at least one with injuries. Elk Company 4 (Ridgway Fire Department) and Ridgway Ambulance were called at 3 p.m., and fire chief Scott Pontious later called for a swift water rescue team from Clearfield County to the scene. The coroner was requested to the scene.
Memorial Day parades and programs are slated Monday in the Kane area.
Parades will be held in Kane and Mt. Jewett along with Memorial Day programs. A Memorial Day service will be held in Ludlow.
BRADFORD - With Pennsylvaniaâ€™s primary election in the rear view mirror, Governor Tom Corbett made a campaign stop at the Bradford Senior Center on Friday morning. Corbett/Cawley campaign signs flanked Campus Drive as approximately 100 people gathered in the senior center to listen to Corbett discuss state matters and take a few questions.
RIDGWAY â€“ Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency [PEMA] officials continued to work hand-in-hand with area residents and emergency officials Friday to assess the damage from Wednesday's flooding that ravaged Elk County, particularly Ridgway where floodwaters reached six feet in some areas.
Ten members of Kaneâ€™s track and field teams took part in Fridayâ€™s PIAA Championship meet at Shippensburg University. While none of the Wolves competing Friday came away with a medal, four Kane athletes are still in the medal hunt on Saturday.
Marjorie B. Newton, 92, formerly of Mt. Jewett, died Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at Bradford Manor.
Born June 19, 1921, in Summerville, she was a daughter ofÂ the late Edward and Olive White Sherman.
On May 17, 1941, in Knapp Creek, N.Y., she marriedÂ Henry Newton who preceded her in death in 2002.
Mrs. Newton had been employed as a seamstress.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Mt. Jewett, the Oilers P39 Camping Club and the Seneca Highlands Trailer Club.
