Anderson places 3rd at Indoor Track and Field State Championship

Kane pole vaulter Nick Anderson cleared 14 feet to place third at the Pennsylvania Indoor State Track and Field Meet held this past Saturday at Penn State University. Anderson had good clearances on his first attempts at 13’6” and 14’ to place third. The winner of the event was Chris Stone from Springfield who cleared 15 feet. Second place went to Ryan Wilkes of Valley View.

Derek M. Wilson, 29, formerly of Kane, died unexpectedly Friday, Feb. 21, 2014 at his home in Fort Collins, Colo.
He was born Nov. 1, 1984 in Kane to Beverly L. Wilson and Terry A. Wasurek, and was raised by his mother and Daniel Rook of Kane.
After graduating from Kane Area High School, he joined the U.S. Army for eight years, became an Army Ranger and served two tours, one in Iraq and the other in Afghanistan, then was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant.
Derek was a member of the Gold Prospectors Association of America, a hobby he greatly enjoyed.

Ludlow American Legion is raising funds for memorial

LUDLOW –- The James Uber American Legion Post 489 in Ludlow is continuing its fundraising campaign to build a Hamilton Township Veterans Memorial near the back gate of Wildcat Park off Route 6.
Nearly $18,000 has been raised to date, according to Bill Blauser, a Purple Heart recipient and commander of American Legion Post 489.

Mary J. Bires, 87, of Ludlow, died Friday, Feb. 28, 2014 at the Kane Community Hospital after an extended illness.
She was born April 13, 1926 in Lamont, the daughter of the late Alois and Mary Prokop. Her childhood was spent in James City.
She was a graduate of the Kane Area High School and had been employed by Holgate Brothers in Kane.
In 1950 she married John P. Bires in Kane. She was a faithful member of St. Callistus Catholic Church

DeLong and Blankenship win regional titles, advance to Hershey

SHARON – Kane seniors Evan DeLong and Cody Blankenship will be returning to Hershey for this week’s PIAA Wrestling Championships. DeLong and Blankenship each won their weight classes at the Northwest Regional Tournament held Friday and Saturday at Sharon Area High School.

Kane places first in cheerleading event

The Kane Competition Cheerleading team attended the Champion Cheer Central March Madness Competition at McDowell High School in Erie on Saturday and came home Grand Champions among all 40 plus teams in attendance. They also placed first in the non-tumble Varsity Division as well as first in the Small Varsity Division with their two different routines. The Best Stunts award also went to Kane.

Three Wolves advance to regional tourney semifinals

SHARON – Three Kane wrestlers advanced to this morning’s semifinals of the Northwest Regional Tournament at Sharon High School. The top four finishers at last weekend’s District 9 tournament advanced to compete at Sharon along with the top six finishers from District 10. Kane’s Austin Woolcock (113 pounds), Cody Blankenship (120 pounds) and Evan DeLong (170 pounds) won their quarterfinal match-ups to move into the semifinal round.

Memoriam piece a favorite at Rendezvous

RIDGWAY – Of all the intricate pieces of artwork throughout the 15th annual Ridgway Chainsaw Carvers Rendezvous, one particular piece sitting on Court Street has stood out to many passersby throughout the week.
The carving masterpiece, created by Mark Bosworth of Massachusetts, features a young girl with angel's wings embracing the neck of a horse. It is a memoriam piece paying tribute the late Amanda Putney of Royalston, Mass., who died in a December 2012 car crash.
