Injuries are reported in Highland Twp. accident

RUSSELL CITY – Multiple injuries have been reported in a two-vehicle crash Wednesday afternoon at the east intersection of Routes 66 and 948 in Highland Township just east of Russell City.
Ridgway-based State Police investigated the accident, but had not filed a press release as of 10 p.m. Wednesday.
The Highland Township Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene at 1:40 p.m. with its rescue truck and eight firefighters. Highland Fire Police also responded, Fire Chief Bill Edinger said.

Highland Township to make payment on sewer loan

JAMES CITY – The Highland Township Board of Supervisors agreed Wednesday to use a portion of the township's Act 13 money to make a loan payment for the James City sewer system.
"It's perfectly legal," Supervisor Jim Wolfe said in commenting on the loan payment. He joined with Supervisors Paul Burton Sr. and Joe Milstead in approving the payment of $13,661, which is due today.
The financially-strapped Highland Township Municipal Authority oversees the water and sewer systems in James City.

Kane girls soccer team wins 1-0 in 2nd OT

Robert Mosier won't soon forget his first win as the head coach of the Kane High girls soccer team.
Tori Schleicher scored on the game's only breakaway Wednesday to give Kane a 1-0 win over Smethport in sudden death overtime. It was Kane's home opener.
Taking a feed from freshman Alyssa Lima-Lopez, Schleicher dribbled in all alone for about 25 yards before blasting a kick into the top right corner of the net for the lone goal. Smethport goalie Baylee Brien was helpless as the winning kick sailed over her head and her outstretched arms.

Planners ready to score applications for Act 13 money

SMETHPORT – The McKean County Planning Commission is ready to score applications for the Act 13 gas well impact fees.
Ken Baldwin, county planner, said the board should begin the review process at its meeting set for Tuesday, Oct. 14 at the county 911 center near Smethport. The 5:30 p.m. meeting is open to the public.
Baldwin discussed the application process Tuesday at a commission meeting at the 911 center.

Historic label is sought for 2 county buildings

SMETHPORT – A campaign is underway to place two McKean County buildings on the National Register for Historic Places.
The buildings include the county courthouse and the Historic McKean County Old Jail Museum. Both buildings are in Smethport. The courthouse is located along Route 6 and the Old Jail Museum is located along King Street at the rear of the courthouse.
McKean County Commissioners Joe DeMott, Al Pingie and Cliff Lane agreed Tuesday to support efforts by the county Office of Economic Development to list the two county buildings on the national historic registry.

Couple bound for court on drug charges

ST. MARYS – Leif Eric Moats (known as Eric), 40, of St. Marys, was held for court Tuesday for his alleged involvement in a criminal conspiracy for the distribution of the drug bath salts.
The charges stem from the drug sting carried out on July 17 in Ridgway and St. Marys that also resulted in the arrests of Tammy Zawatski and Rachel Shrefler, both of Ridgway, Alan George of New York, and Eric's wife Kristin M. (Kronenwetter) Moats.

Kane boys lose high-scoring match to Ridgway, 8-5

The Kane High boys soccer team hosted Ridgway Tuesday in a match that featured plenty of back-and-forth action and lots and lots of goals.
Ridgway prevailed 8-5 as senior Justin Kinkead scored five goals to lead the Elkers to their fourth win in five matches in the past seven days.
Chris Cummings, a senior, scored three goals for Kane, including one midway through the first half that gave the Wolves their only lead at 2-1. 

Kane falls to ECC in 3 sets

ST. MARYS – Although they played a strong two sets, the Lady Wolves fell short of a win at Elk County Catholic as the Crusaders took the match 25-17, 25-18, 25-3.
"I was very pleased with what the girls did in the first two sets," said Kane head varsity volleyball coach Judy Kessler. "ECC is a very solid, strong, undefeated team and we hung with them and were able to generate an offense. We passed well, served well, and attacked the ball well. And, we had to play without two of our starters because of injuries."
