The American flag at the Kane Volunteer Fire Department was at half staff recently in honor of two Boston firemen killed two weeks ago in the line of duty.

Applause Talent Competition

Nikky's Dance Studio from Smethport attended Applause Talent Competition in Cleveland, Ohio over the weekend. They received for the twelve dances they took: three platinums, eight high golds, and a gold. They also received for their efforts two first place overalls, two second place overalls, a third, fourth, sixth and seventh overall. An amazing energy award, Mackenzie and Kolby each won a scholarship to attend a dance camp this summer in Chicago for their solos. Firehouse and Daddy both won trips to New York City over the summer also to take master classes, some with the Rockettes.

Lantz Corners sewer work

Work continues on the installation of sewage collection lines for the Lantz Corners Sewer District. The lines will carry sewage to the Mt. Jewett sewage treatment plant.

Fourth-grade teacher Debbie Szymanski hosted the presentation a day before today's fourth-grade Field Trip to Sprague's Maple Farms in Portville, N.Y.

First-grader Charles Strickland achieves AR 100 Club membership

Charles Strickland, a student in Mrs. Julie Boyer's first grade class achieved Accelerated Reader 100 recently at the Kane Area Elementary School. This young reader thoroughly enjoys James Marshall's FOX series. He loves "Reading 100" time at school. For fun, Charlie also earmarks reading as his favorite past time. If he couldn't read, he'd choose to listen to rock and roll music and eat pizza.

Firefighters discuss Kane emergency

Members of area fire departments gathered Wednesday evening at the Kane Fire Hall to review the response to the chemical truck emergency in Kane last week. The truck toppled on its side while making a 90-degree turn at Fraley and Greeves streets in Kane. The accident led to the largest evacuation ever in McKean County.

Penn State Extension Speaks at Smethport Rotary

Penn State Extension Educator, Jim Clark, was the guest speaker for the Smethport Rotary at the Desert Rose Café in Smethport on Tuesday, January 31, 2012. Clark spoke on local water resource issues, including a study of 50 private water wells in Cameron County completed this past summer. McKean County residents, with private water supplies, have an opportunity to have their water tested for free from May 14th to June 22nd, through a Colcum Grant secured by the Headwaters RC&D. Applications are available at the Penn State Extension or the McKean Conservation District Office.

The Kane Chamber of Commerce honored the Kane Eagles Club as its "business-of-the-year" Thursday at its annual banquet at the Kane Country Club.
