Conservation District elects officers

At the opening of the McKean County Conservation District’s regular board meeting in January, two new members were sworn in. Frank Tanner, a farmer director and Steve Sherk, a public director, will each serve a 4-year term. Frank, who is from Smethport, is taking over for longtime director Jim McKean, who will continue to serve on the Board as Associate Director. Steve, who resides in Bradford, has been serving on the Board as Associate Director and took the place of Cliff Lane as Cliff was appointed as the Commissioner Director.

Recycling bins at winter site

The trash recycling bins for Kane now are located in the parking lot at the former Chestnut Street Elementary School. This is the winter-only location for the bins for the disposal of paper, aluminum cans, plastic bottles and other recyclable items. In the summer months, the bins are moved to a site at Glenwood Park on Hacker Street. Casella, the operator of the landfill near Hutchins, empties the bins on a regular basis. If bins are full, residents are asked to take their trash back home until the bins are emptied.

Lutheran Home wins national award

The Lutheran Home at Kane has received a national award for its programs to unite generations. A retirement dinner was held Wednesday in Bartlett Hall at the First United Methodist Church in Kane to honor Dr. Ken Langille, who plans to retire Dec. 2. School playground work

Work is under way to install playground equipment near the rear of the new Kane Elementary School along West Hemlock Avenue. Kane Lawn and Garden is the contractor for the installation work. The Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) at the school held numerous fund-raisers to buy the equipment. The Kane School Board agreed earlier this month to hire a contractor to install the new playground equipment.

On Oct. 12, Elk Regional celebrated the opening of a new location at 190 North Fraley Street in Kane, next door to St. Marys Pharmacy, with a ribbon cutting and open house. The new location includes Outpatient Rehabilitation services and a branch office for Community Nurses, Inc., the region’s premier home health agency and an affiliate of the Elk Regional Health System.
