School celebrates 'Week of the Young Child'

May 13, 2015

Mr. Gaetano, School Superintendent at Kane Area School District, recently visited the Early Intervention preschool class in the Kane elementary school to read the story, "Number One Sam."
"Number One Sam" is the book that was chosen to be read statewide to promote the importance of literacy development in young children. Mr. Gaetano was one of many who participated in this event to celebrate, “The Week of the Young Child.”

Celebration for Elizabeth Kane

Liz Haberberger, left, and Constance Anderson, right, in costume as Elizabeth Kane, read excerpts from the founding lady of Kane's journal on Tuesday evening at the Thomas L Kane Memorial Chapel. The Kane Historic Preservation Society held a birthday celebration in honor of what would be Elizabeth Kane's 179th birthday. In addition to the readings by Haberberger and Anderson, the music group Co Townes entertained the nearly full house.

KARE for Kane Brewfest

The Second Annual KARE for Kane Brewfest was held on Saturday evening. More than 30 different beers were available for tasting at the event, which was held at the former NAPA building on North Fraley Street. Observing National Day of Prayer

Kane High School students gather Thursday morning around the flagpole in front of the school to observe the National Day of Prayer. It was the 64th annual National Day of Prayer in the U.S. This year's theme is "Lord, Hear Our Cry.”

Annual Fund Drive

Friends' Memorial Public Library continues its Annual Fund Drive with library trustee, Suellen Snapp, receiving a donation from CW Hardware represented by 22-month old Mason Bond and his father, Eric Bond. Twenty-two month old Mason had just attended Wednesday's Preschool Storytime at the library with his grandmother, Sharon. Mason especially likes playing the musical shakers. Fund drive donations may still be mailed or delivered to the library on Chase Street.

Accelerated Reader winners

Mt. Jewett maintenance crew

Rod Peterson (left), maintenance supervisor for the borough of Mt. Jewett, congratulates John Hayduk (right), new member of the maintenance crew. The Mt. Jewett Borough Council acted Monday to appoint Hayduk to the crew. Hayduk will take over as maintenance supervisor when Peterson retires in September.

Donation of food

Students at the Kane Middle School are pictured with some of the donated food collected recently. The Kane Middle School Student Council organized the food drive and the response was overwhelming. More than 2,200 items were collected, with the food being donated to the Kane Food Pantry and the Mt. Jewett Food Pantry. Student of the Month

The Kane Rotary Club's Student of the Month for April is Ryan Stefani. Ryan is the son of Al and Dawn Stefani. He is enrolled in the Honors Course of study. Ryan is the treasurer of the National Honor Society as well as a member of the Science Olympiad team. He plans to attend Full Sail University in Florida upon graduation and work toward a bachelor's degree in science. His long-term goal is to develop games that will help people as they have helped him at different times in his life. Ryan is pictured with his Mom, Dawn Stefani.

Rotary welcomes Sam Cummings of CJ Spirits

This week the St. Marys Rotary Club welcomed Sam Cummings of CJ Spirits located in Kane. Sam gave an interesting presentation on his business and fielded questions from the membership. Sam is also a member of the Kane Rotary Club. He was the guest of Club President Vern Kreckel III and is pictured above. The club wishes to acknowledge Sam for his presentation, and for visiting for the evening.
