Providing blankets for children

These kids in the Being Faithful Friends (BFF) program at the Presbyterian Church in Kane have participated in the Project Linus program to provide new handmade blankets to needy and homeless children. Zanadu at 105 Fraley St., Kane, is the local drop-off location for Project Linus. BFF is a once-a-week after-school program for children in kindergarten through fifth grade at the Kane Elementary School. About 60 children registered for the program, now in its second year. For more information on donating to Project Linus, contact Christine Park, general manager at Zanadu.

Annual Fund Drive for 2015

Carol Niklaus, vice-president of Friends' Memorial Public Library trustees, is assisted by library volunteer, Tess Boschert, to the left, and trustee, Denice Klaiber, to the right, in the preparation of fund drive letters which were sent to Kane area families and businesses this week. The Annual Fund Drive 2015 has begun. It is the financial backbone of Friends' Library's operation.

Donating blood in Kane

Clara Paul (left) of Hutchins prepares to donate another pint of blood Tuesday at the Community Blood Bank Blood Drive at the Kane Area Community Center. Brooke Yurchisin (right) of Pittsfield is a phlebotomist with the Erie-based Blood Bank that supplies Kane Community Hospital with blood. Paul, a regular blood donor, already has donated 18 gallons of blood and is one pint shy of reaching the 19-gallon plateau. The next Community Blood Bank Blood Drive is Tuesday, May 26 from noon to 5 p.m. at the community center in Kane.

KVFD Auxiliary officers

The Kane Volunteer Fire Department (KVFD) Auxiliary has elected officers for the year. The group includes, left to right: Denice Klaiber, treasurer; Toni Kane, chaplain; Becky Gullifer, vice president; and Sue Snyder, president. Secretary Karen Smith was not present when the photo was taken. The Auxiliary holds events to benefit the fire department. The Auxiliary earlier this month presented a check of $1,500 to the fire department.

The Kane Firemen's Relief Association has elected new officers. They include, left to right: Jim Greville, vice president; Joe Stauffer, president; and Randy Gullifer, treasurer. Secretary Don Blint was absent when the photo was taken. The Firemen's Relief Association oversees the expenditure of public tax money, which is designated for specific purposes in the fire department.

Fingerprinting newly registered kindergarten students

Pennsylvania State Police troopers were at the Kane Area Elementary School on Thursday to fingerprint newly registered kindergarten students. The fingerprinting is part of the annual process to admit young and eager minds into the Kane Area School District's incoming kindergarten class.

Ridgway Chainsaw Carvers Rendezvous

Wasting no time, carvers could be seen working on new wooden carvings Sunday afternoon at the 16th annual Ridgway Chainsaw Carvers Rendezvous. As part of the event, live carvings will be happening in Ridgway throughout the upcoming week.

Soup and pie at Friends' Library

Stephanie Swanson and her daughters, Sophia and Chelsea, announce the upcoming Soup & Pie Lunch at Friends' Memorial Public Library which will take place Tuesday, Feb. 24 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the library along Chase Street. Stephanie, Sophia, and Chelsea, regular attendees of the library's Block Parties for Pre-schoolers held Saturday mornings, are also supporters of the Soup & Pie event.

Big Buck Contest banquet held Thursday

On Thursday evening, the 10th annual Big Buck Contest awards banquet, sponsored by The Daily Press, Ridgway Record and Kane Republican newspapers took place at the Johnsonburg Fire Hall. A crowd of nearly 300 gathered for the event which included the announcement of this year's winners in the adult, youth and mentor divisions along with prizes for the oldest and youngest hunter, smallest buck and random male and female. A special contest tabloid will be published Wednesday, Jan. 28.
