Elementary school Science Showcase

A Science Showcase was held Tuesday evening in the multi-purpose room at the Kane Elementary School on Hemlock Avenue. Taking part in the program for students in kindergarten through fifth grade is Lily Deane (behind table), a fifth-grader at the school. Looking on are her mother Ashley Asel and her 3-year-old sister Desiree Asel of Kane. A meeting of the Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) also was held Tuesday evening at the school.

Donation to fund drive

Shown are Bob James and his wife Ann presenting a check to Cindy Parker, library director, for the Library’s Annual Fund Drive. Not only do Mr. and Mrs. James donate annually to the drive, they also volunteer at the circulation desk and are on hand to help at other library functions. If you haven’t yet donated please mail your contribution to Friends’ Memorial Public Library, 230 Chase St., Kane, PA 16735.

Honors for senior volunteers

State Rep. Kathy Rapp (R-Warren) has presented State House of Representatives citations to the first two winners of the volunteer-of-the-year award at the Kane Senior Center. The group includes, left to right: Beverly Sivak, the 2014 volunteer-of-the-year at the center; John Mihalko, the 2013 volunteer-of-the-year at the center; and Jill Thompson, the manager of Rapp's office in Kane.

Rotary donation

Rotary president Gary Rhodes is shown giving a check to Kane Area Radio board members Chris Niklaus and Jim Greville. A $1,000 donation was made to go toward the startup equipment for the new station. The station has received nearly two dozen donations from organizations, businesses and individuals. Much of the equipment has been purchased and installed. The emergency broadcast system is the next item to be purchased. Although there is not a definite timeline for being on the air things appear to be in the later stages.

Eagle Scout

Riley Austin, a senior at Kane Area High School, received the Eagle Scout Award at a Court of Honor Ceremony held Sunday, April 13, 2014 at Olmsted Manor in Ludlow. Eagle Scout is the highest rank that can be achieved by a Boy Scout. Riley is a member of the Allegheny Highlands Council Troop 422, chartered by the First United Methodist Church, led by Scoutmaster Jon Blackmore, Assistant Scoutmaster John Rezzelle, Bob Ishman and Bill Thompson. In his Troop, he held the leadership positions of Assistant Patrol Leader and Patrol Leader, and has earned 30 Merit Badges.

Coming together for "One Book"

The McKean County Family Centers and community leaders have come together to celebrate Pennsylvania “One Book, Every Young Child” program during the month of April. This is the ninth year of this literacy program that highlights the value of reading early and often to children. Reading aloud to children is an important factor in literacy development and one of the best activities you can do to prepare a child for school. This years featured book is, “Stripes of All Types” written and illustrated by Susan Stockdale.

4th grade presents musical

The fourth grade class at the Kane Elementary School presents the musical "Groovin' With The Grimms" on Thursday evening at the Kane Middle School auditorium. Music teacher Tara Blake directed the musical with the assistance of the fourth-grade teachers-- Debbie Szymanski, Jackie Watts, Brigid Lundgren and Brittany Peterson.

The American flag at the Kane Volunteer Fire Department was at half staff recently in honor of two Boston firemen killed two weeks ago in the line of duty.

Applause Talent Competition

Nikky's Dance Studio from Smethport attended Applause Talent Competition in Cleveland, Ohio over the weekend. They received for the twelve dances they took: three platinums, eight high golds, and a gold. They also received for their efforts two first place overalls, two second place overalls, a third, fourth, sixth and seventh overall. An amazing energy award, Mackenzie and Kolby each won a scholarship to attend a dance camp this summer in Chicago for their solos. Firehouse and Daddy both won trips to New York City over the summer also to take master classes, some with the Rockettes.
