Ken VanGiesen honored prior to game

A ceremony was held prior to the Kane and Elk County Catholic football game to retire Staff Sergeant Ken VanGiesen's football jersey. Ken was a member of the 1998 Kane football team and a member of the Big 30 squad in 1999. VanGiesen was killed July 18, 2011 in action while serving in Afghanistan with the Pennsylvania Army National Guard.

Parking spaces to be cut in winter

These parking spaces on the south side of Greeves Street in Kane will be eliminated between Oct. 15 and April 15, according to action taken last week by the Kane Borough Council. Parking will be banned on the south side of Greeves Street between the intersection of Fraley Street at the traffic light to Summit Drive adjacent to the Kane Motel. The borough Streets Department will post signs to remind motorists not to park in this section of Greeves Street between Oct. 15 and April 15.

State Senate President Pro Tempore Joe Scarnati (R-Brockway) greets Senior State Judge John Cleland (right) of Kane at a ceremony Thursday to mark the opening of the Sky Walk at the Kinzua Bridge State Park near Mt. Jewett. In remarks at the ceremony, Scarnati said the Sky Walk would "bring people to our area to show how beautiful it is."

The state legislators were honored Thursday for their support of the Sky Walk project. The legislators each received a framed photo of the Sky Walk during a program prior to the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the project at the park.

Glass floor at end of 'Sky Walk'

A section of the deck at the end of the "Sky Walk" at the Kinzua Bridge State Park features a glass floor. A grand-opening ceremony at the refurbished bridge will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the park. The Kinzua Bridge Fall Festival is set for Saturday and Sunday. The Kinzua Bridge Foundation sponsors the festival, which include arts and crafts, food vendors and musical entertainment. Visitors are encouraged to bring a lawn chair to sit and enjoy the music in the park.

Refurbished Kinzua Bridge is open

The refurbished bridge at the Kinzua Bridge State Park near Mt. Jewett now is open to the public. A grand-opening ceremony at the bridge will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday. The Kinzua Bridge Fall Festival will be held at park Saturday and Sunday. A tornado in 2003 toppled the midsection of the historic bridge. The refurbished bridge is built on the remaining park-side towers and is called the "Sky Walk." Several state officials are expected to participate in the grand-opening Thursday.

Replacing a storm drain

The Kane borough Streets Department is replacing a 24-inch storm drain. Rick Powell Excavation is providing the backhoe for the project, which will extend a storm drain from the vicinity of a building at the rear of Dangelo's Auto Body on North Fraley Street to link with an existing line that runs beneath Fraley Street.
The project will cover a distance of about 100 feet.
