Flags flown at half staff

Flags around the U.S. flew at half staff Thursday as a tribute to the victims of the terroristic attack of Sept. 11, 2001. This flagpole is in front of the McKean County Courthouse in Smethport.

Fire pump testing in Hamlin Township

A stream of water soars high in the sky at dusk during a pump demonstration for the Hamlin Township Volunteer Fire Department in Hazel Hurst. The department is considering purchasing the $3,200 "turbo-drafting" pump, which is designed to increase water volume. The demonstration took place earlier this week at the community park in Hazel Hurst.

Tornado sirens are repaired

This tornado siren at Kane High School has been repaired. The tornado siren at the Kane Fire Hall on Poplar Street also has been upgraded. The two sirens were installed following the 1985 deadly tornado that struck the Kane area.

The latest Kane and Mt. Jewett Eagle Scouts gather prior to the start of college and high school. Jewett; Jon-Luke Gelsick, son of Pete and Kristi Gelsick of Kane; and Dan Blackmore, son of Jon and Jen Blackmore of Kane. Missing from the photo are Eagle Scouts Nathan Klaiber, son of Todd and Denice Klaiber of Kane; Riley Austin, son of Scott and Bev Austin of Kane; and Keith Brown, son of Barb and Keith Brown of Kane.

Kindergarten orientation

Orientation for new kindergarten students at the Kane Elementary School took place Tuesday and today at the school. Kindergarten teacher Nichole Krietemeyer (left) greets 5-year-old Annaliese Holt (center) and the girl's parents-- Nadine and John Holt of Kane. There are 73 incoming kindergarten students at the school. Classes in the Kane School District resume Tuesday.

Orientation was held Monday morning for 86 incoming Kane Area High School freshmen. Members of the KAHS Class of 2018 were welcomed by co-principals Todd Stanko and Natalie Miller-Martini and given a tour of the building by members of the student council. Pictured before Monday's orientation are, from left to right, student council members Danielle Taylor and Patrick Moore, co-principal Natalie Miller-Martini and freshmen Garrett Walters, Kyle Pierotti, Gunnar Fryzlewicz and Joey Ferranto. The first day of classes for students is Tuesday, Aug. 26.

Dice Run donation

Dave Swanson, representing the Kane VFW King David Post #1132, presents Amie Gullifer with a $500 check for the 2nd Annual Fallen Soldier Memorial Dice Run. This year's event, hosted by the Kane VFW, was held in memory of John Bernhard, one of the original organizers of the ride. The dice run included an escort ride to the Gibbs Hill Cemetery for a blessing of the bikes and allowed riders to pay their respects to SSG Ken VanGiesen. Gullifer, who is the sister of VanGiesen, also recognized the James City Cafe and the Kane Eagles Club for their generous donations.

St. John's Episcopal Church presents check to Friends' Memorial Public Library

Dick Buckley, treasurer, and Jack Grube, senior warden of St. John's Episcopal Church, present a $500 check to the Friends' Memorial Public Library Endowment Fund in honor of Larry and Jean Bush. Accepting the check is Library Director Cindy Parker. The check represents $5,000 in donations that the church has made to the library over the past five years.

Kane Players performance

The Kane Players followed up last month's successful "Terraces of Kane Summit" with another blockbuster, "Seussical Jr." last night. "Seussical Jr." will be presented twice today, once at 2:30 p.m. and again at 6:30 p.m. at the Kane Middle School Auditorium. The plot borrows from several Dr. Seuss classics, including "Horton Hears a Who" and "Cat in the Hat" and features many talented young singers and dancers.
