Read to “Ruby” at Friends’ Memorial Public Library

“Ruby” the therapy dog will visit Friends’ Memorial Public Library on Saturday, Aug. 9 at 9 a.m. to help children practice their reading skills. Come read to “Ruby.”

Mt. Jewett Robot Contest

A Robot Contest for children was held recently at the Mt. Jewett Memorial Public Library. Three winners picked anonymously by the Library Board include, left to right: Shakira Yoder, third place with "The Tin Man; James Deane, first place with "Oscar;" and Lainey Deane, second place with "Bartholomew." Everyone who made a robot was given a ride pass for this weekend's Swedish Festival. The first place winner received $5; second received $3; third received $2.

Hospital aids fire department

Kane Community Hospital (KCH) has presented the Kane Volunteer Fire Department with the first of two $6,000 donations for 2014. Taking part in the check presentation are, left to right: Brian Nelson, fire department president; Tim Holt, fire chief; Gary Rhodes, chief executive officer of KCH; and Randy Gullifer, treasurer for the fire department. The fire department plans to use the aid to upgrade its equipment. KCH is an affiliate of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC)--Hamot Medical Center in Erie.

Kane hosts municipal leaders

The borough of Kane hosted a dinner-meeting Thursday for municipal leaders from McKean, Warren, Potter, Elk and Cameron Counties (McWAPEC). Among those taking part in the program at the main pavilion at Evergreen Park are, left to right: Janet Bard, a Kane councilwoman and vice president of McWAPEC; State Police Trooper Martin Henneman, who spoke on personal protection and safety; and Mary Polaski of Johnsonburg, secretary-treasurer of McWAPEC. Ron King of Johnsonburg, president of the organization, was unable to attend. Lynda Karger of Kane provided the catered buffet meal for 60.

Blast in the Burg 2014

The annual Blast in the Burg drum and bugle corp competition took place Thursday evening at Memorial Field in Johnsonburg. The pleasant weather drew a large crowd to the event. Shown above is the Raiders of Wayne, N.J. and below is Genesis of Austin, Texas. Additional corps performing were Coastal Surge of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Les Stentors of Quebec, Canada, 7th Regiment from New London, Conn., Legends of Kalamazoo, Mich., and the Spartans of Nashua, N.H.

Sprucing up Mt. Jewett

An army of volunteers turned out Tuesday evening to spruce up Mt. Jewett in advance of the annual Swedish Festival to be held Aug. 8-10. Among those participating in the town cleanup are Raychel Keller (left) and Madison Lister (right), both 12-year-old Mt. Jewett girls who are students at the Kane Middle School.

Crash in Jay Township

A tractor-trailer crashed off of state Route 255, Bennetts Valley Highway in the Byrnedale area of Jay Township.
The vehicle stopped just feet short of hitting a house. The accident happened just after 5:30 a.m. Monday as the truck went off the roadway. The truck driver was taken to Penn Highlands Elk for medical treatment. His condition was not known. State police at Ridgway were investigating the accident and had yet to release an official public information report.

John Bloomquist recognized at Art in the Wilds

Marilyn Blackmore, the show director of Art in the Wilds, reads a proclamation recognizing longtime Kane artist John Bloomquist for his contributions to the arts on Saturday. Bloomquist, who is also a member of the Art in the Wilds committee, had a table displaying some of his works at the park, including pottery and paintings. Looking on as the proclamation is read is John, his wife Cheri, his brother Seth and daughter Karin and many friends.

One of the newest businesses on Fraley Street held a ribbon-cutting on Friday afternoon. Sweet Sensation Chocolate Creation recently opened its doors for business. A variety of sweets and gift ideas are available for purchase from 10 a.m. through 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Ribbon cutting at Paul's Trading Post & Gift Shop

A ribbon-cutting was held on Friday morning at Paul's Trading Post & Gift Shop, which is under new management. Present at the ceremony were, from left to right, Jill Thompson of the Kane Chamber of Commerce, Peg King, Jason King, Dan Imbrogno and Erin Vassallo of the Kane Chamber of Commerce. Paul's Trading Post & Gift Shop will hold a combination Grand Opening/Customer Appreciation Day on Saturday, July 12. They will be having music, vendors, food, the Ludlow VFD Dunk Tank, fireworks, prizes and giveaways.
