Donation of food

Students at the Kane Middle School are pictured with some of the donated food collected recently. The Kane Middle School Student Council organized the food drive and the response was overwhelming. More than 2,200 items were collected, with the food being donated to the Kane Food Pantry and the Mt. Jewett Food Pantry. Student of the Month

The Kane Rotary Club's Student of the Month for April is Ryan Stefani. Ryan is the son of Al and Dawn Stefani. He is enrolled in the Honors Course of study. Ryan is the treasurer of the National Honor Society as well as a member of the Science Olympiad team. He plans to attend Full Sail University in Florida upon graduation and work toward a bachelor's degree in science. His long-term goal is to develop games that will help people as they have helped him at different times in his life. Ryan is pictured with his Mom, Dawn Stefani.

Rotary welcomes Sam Cummings of CJ Spirits

This week the St. Marys Rotary Club welcomed Sam Cummings of CJ Spirits located in Kane. Sam gave an interesting presentation on his business and fielded questions from the membership. Sam is also a member of the Kane Rotary Club. He was the guest of Club President Vern Kreckel III and is pictured above. The club wishes to acknowledge Sam for his presentation, and for visiting for the evening.

Headed to Big 30 Academic Banquet

Kane High School Principal Todd Stanko (right) congratulates Hannah Ross (left), who will be representing Kane High at the annual Big 30 Academic Banquet on May 11 at the Old Library Restaurant in Olean, N.Y. Ross is the daughter of Megan Inghram and Erik Ross of Mt. Jewett. Ross currently is ranked No. 1 academically in her Senior Class. Ross will attend Penn State University and major in health policy and administration in preparation for hospital management. Ross was co-captain of the Kane girls volleyball team this year. She dances at Studio K in Kane.

Middle school band at IU9 festival

April 28, 2015

On Friday, April 24, 10 members of the Kane Middle School Concert Band attended the Junior High School IU9 Band Festival in Johnsonburg. The band consisted of the top 130 band students from schools in McKean, Elk, Potter, and Cameron counties. The guest director was Sean Clerkins from Gannon University. The students put on a great performance that was met with a standing ovation.

Mt. Jewett Ambulance Squad

These are the volunteer members of the Mt. Jewett Ambulance Squad. The group includes, left to right: Patrick McGuire, Joyce Alexis, Deb Myers, Jamie Moreth and Tom Morris. The first four listed are trained Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs). Morris is a first-responder.

Senior Center birthdays

The Kane Senior Center held a tureen dinner Saturday evening at the center on Fraley Street in Uptown Kane to honor members with April birthdays. Celebrating birthdays this month are, left to right: John Mehalko, 77; Fern Throne, 78; Gene Nunn, 74; and Ray Brzezinski, 67. Daily luncheons for seniors are served at the center. The Kane Chamber of Commerce hosted a luncheon Wednesday in observance of Administrative Professionals Day. More than 40 attended the luncheon at the Kane Manor on Clay Street. Participants for the program include, left to right: Erin Vassallo, executive director of the Kane Area Development Center (KADC) and Chamber of Commerce; Penny Barber of Kane, featured speaker; and Nadine Holt, president of the Chamber of Commerce.

New main gas line in Kane

Utility Pipeline is replacing a 4-inch main gas line at Haines and Yarnell streets in Kane. The work for Knox Energy, the local gas company, includes a new line along the south side of Haines Street for much of the block between Hacker and Yarnell streets. The work also includes this section on Yarnell Street near Haines Street.

Mt. Jewett firefighters banquet

The Mt. Jewett Volunteer Fire Department held their annual banquet Saturday evening at the firehall. Those seated at the head table for the event were, from left to right, Chief Dan Gustafson, Megan Forquer, Steve Hale, Marilyn Compton, Will Antrim, Becky Barnhart, Toni Pearson and Ed Fisher, Second Assistant Fire Chief. Hale, the Mt. Jewett Police Chief, was the speaker for the night and Compton was the coordinator of the event.
