Ash Wednesday tradition

The Rev. Philip Pinczewski, pastor of St. Callistus Catholic Church in Kane, places ashes on the forehead of Kathy Rostan of Route 321, East Kane, during an Ash Wednesday Mass. Ash Wednesday marks the start of Lent for Christians. Ashes are a reminder of human mortality.

Dr. Seuss week

Dental month

Brittany Elton has been volunteering to do dental presentations for first graders at Kane Elementary this week. They’ve learned about proper care and treatment. She’s also given each student a free goodie bag to encourage daily brushing. Here she is pictured with Emma and Eric in room 111.

Nittany Minimart is open

Four key members of the Nittany Minimart gather with a display at the company's new store at Lantz Corners. The store now is open around-the-clock, seven days a week. The group includes, left to right: Rhonda Richards, territory supervisor; Christine Orenak of St. Marys, store manager; Lori Stem, territory manager; and Samantha Jashurek Yocum, territory manager. Yocum is a Kane native and a 1993 graduate of Kane Area High School. The store features fuel, fresh-made sandwiches, pizza and snacks and beverages. A ribbon-cutting for the new store now is planned for 10 a.m. Thursday.

Lending a helping ear

Mrs. Paula Mosier and her second grade class would like to thank Mr. Richard Coleman, past editor of The Kane Republican, for his faithful, weekly help listening to students read. Mr. Coleman has helped Mrs. Mosier over several years for this one-hour weekly reading time. Mr. Coleman, Mrs. Mosier, and the children enjoyed ice cream sundaes as an end of year celebration. Thank you Mr. Coleman.

Preschool students tour elementary school

Mrs. Heckman's five-year-old students are one step closer to completing their preschool. Both the morning and afternoon classes made a trip to the Kane Elementary School where they participated in a tour of the many rooms they would encounter when entering kindergarten this fall.
