Dave Peterson of Sheffield won the Best of Show - Motorcyle Division - for his 2008 Yamaha Raider at Saturday's James City car show. The event started out with some poor weather, but the crowds picked up in the afternoon as the rain stopped and the sun came out.

Picnic-cookout at library

On a beautiful September evening, the volunteers of Friends' Memorial Public Library were celebrated Sept. 17 at a picnic-cookout held inside and outside the library in Kane. Organized by library trustee Ray Brzezinski, there were drawings for prizes and popular music of the 50s from "Sum-Sum-Summertime" to "See You in September" was played and sung by the Kane Guitar Choir with a bit of  help from the audience.

New sidewalk at Tops Market

Workers from Kingsview of Lakewood, N.Y. install a new sidewalk along North Fraley Street in front of the Tops Supermarket in Kane. The project is scheduled for completion this week.

Raising the pole

Some James City residents helped to raise a pole in the middle of the James City ball field for Saturday's greased pole-climbing contest. The event will be held in conjunction with Saturday's James City car show. Shown helping to set the pole into the ground are, from left to right, Dylan Buhl, Robbie Fitzpatrick, Kirk Rounsville, Mark Hulings, and Mike Thiry. Also helping but not pictured was Tim Garity.

Donation for Patriot Award

Chuck Wilbert (right), commander of the Kane Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 1132, presents a $1,000 donation for the Staff Sgt. Kenneth R. VanGiesen Patriot Award. Accepting the donation is Frank Sirianni (left), president of the Kane Lions Club and committee chairman for the Patriot Award. The award, initiated by the Lions Club, goes to graduating Kane High seniors who enlist in the U.S. military. The award honors VanGiesen, a Kane native who was killed in Afghanistan last year while serving with the Pennsylvania Army National Guard.

Remembering 9/11 victims

Lenny Anderson, commander of the Smethport Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 2497, speaks Tuesday at a ceremony to remember victims of the 9/11 terrorist attack. The VFW and American Legion in Smethport conducted the ceremony on the plaza in front of the McKean County Courthouse. Mel Bauer, a veteran volunteer firefighter from Saxonburg, Pa., paid tribute to the "first-responders" who died at the World Trade Center in New York City. The ceremony included a 21-gun salute and the playing of taps.

Donation for Postcard Book

Northwest Savings Bank of Kane has donated $1,000 to the Kane Historical Preservation Society to assist in the publication of the organization’s second Postcard Book. Randy Durante (center), manager of the Kane office of Northwest Savings, presents the check to Wendy Oakes (left), treasurer of the board for the society. Sue Holt (right), also a society board member, holds a copy of the Postcard Book entitled “Kane Summit In The Wilds”—“A Visual Journey Into Our Past.” The 92-page book, which contains numerous old postcards and photos of Kane, is sold at the Kane Depot on Fraley Street.
