Steeple arrives for East Kane church

A steeple has arrived for the New Beginnings Assembly of God Church on Route 321 in East Kane. Posing with the steeple are Bob Rhodes (left) of Kane, the church secretary; and Jim Danielson of Lantz Corners, the chairman of buildings and grounds. A crane is scheduled to erect the steeple Thursday. American Church Steeples and Baptistries of Wedowee, Ala. built and delivered the 24-foot Fiberglas steeple. The Rev. Ed Carocci is pastor of the church.

Aid for iPads at Lutheran Home

The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) of Kane has donated $1,000 for the iCan program at the Lutheran Home at Kane. This donation, plus others, has enabled the Lutheran Home to purchase six new Apple iPads for use by residents. Taking part in the check presentation at the VFW are, left to right: Jim Wismar, chaplain and trustee for the VFW; Chuck Wilbert. VFW commander; Anna Wismar, Lutheran Home volunteer; Gloria Spangler, information technology director at the Lutheran Home; and Kristin Martonik, a Lutheran Home volunteer who is holding her 3-year-old daughter, Sadie.

Ignorance at recycling bins

Ignorant Kane borough residents continue to create a mess by dumping off their recyclables even when the collection bins are full. This recent photo shows that all six collection bins are overflowing at the recycling site at Glenwood Park on Hacker Street. Casella, which now operates the former McKean County landfill, is scheduled to empty the bins every Tuesday and Friday. Under the new “zero-sort” recycling program, Casella allows cardboard, paper, aluminum cans and plastic bottles to be deposited in any of the collection bins.

Mt. Jewett Rotary Club welcome District Governor

Mt. Jewett Rotary Club President Larry Doyon and other Rotary Members welcomed O. Lee Dyer Jr., Rotary District Governor 7280 to a recent meeting of the Mt. Jewett Rotary Club. Dyer gave an inspirational talk about Rotary’s commitment to helping others locally and around the world. He provided the members with updates to ongoing projects along with Rotary’s future plans for helping others. The Club also discussed upcoming local projects including the McKean County Big Brothers and Big Sisters summer picnic that will be hosted by the Mt. Jewett Rotary Club at the Mt.

Honoring victims of shootings

Under a Presidential Proclamation, the American flag will fly at half-staff until sunset today at all public buildings in honor of the victims of the tragic shootings last Friday in the movie theatre in Aurora, Colo. This is the scene at the flagpole in front of the McKean County Courthouse in Smethport.

Sybil Kane Memorial Scholarship for nursing awarded

This recipient of this year's Sybil Kane Memorial Scholarship for nursing was Deborah Lorenzo. Here Deborah (right) receives the check from Pam Bray, RN, Director of Nursing and Inpatient Services at Kane Community Hospital in the Gardens at KCH. The selection is made by a Kane Area High School scholarship committee with input from KCH. Deborah is attending Gannon in the fall.

Lorenzo received the National Honor Society Senior Scholarship in Memory of Phil Imbrogno. She also received the Diane J. Hulings Memorial Scholarship.
