Emily Steele (left) received a $1,000 Rotary scholarship in honor of Jim Salvamoser, a Rotarian who died in December. Corey McGuire (right) received a four-year Rotary scholarship.

Sgt. Palmer Memorial Scholarship

William Hulings (left), a 2012 graduate of Kane Area High School, is the recipient of the Sgt. Jeffrey A. Palmer Memorial Scholarship. Dr. Todd A. Palmer (right), brother of the Kane soldier who died in 1992 at the age of 21, presented the $1,000 scholarship at commencement. Samuel Palmer (front left), 8-year-old nephew of the soldier, accompanied his father to the ceremony. This is the 20th anniversary of the Palmer Scholarship, which includes a plaque. A permanent tribute to Sgt. Palmer is located in the hallway just outside the high school auditorium entrance.

Dave Westerburg (left), president of the Kane School Board, greets State Senior Judge John Cleland (center) of Kane as the guest speaker for commencement Friday at Kane High School. Dr. Maryann Anderson (right), the superintendent of the Kane Area School District, also spoke at the program in the high school auditorium. Cleland is a 1965 graduate of Kane High and has lived in Kane most of his life.

Veteran receives diploma

Jeff Kepler (left), principal at Kane High School, presents a diploma to Randee Ott Kohler (right) at commencement Friday at the school auditorium. Kohler, who now resides in Lebanon, Pa., left Kane High school in 1964 to enlist the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. Kohler received a standing ovation when he stepped on stage to finally receive his Kane High School diploma.

On Monday, May 28, members from the Kane Elks Lodge along with students from the Kane Elementary School marched in the Memorial Day Parade. Students taking part in the parade were the students that had been selected as Student of the Month for their grade during the 2011-2012 school year. The Kane Elks Lodge sponsors the Student of the Month program. Pictured are the students that marched in the parade, along with John “Orson” Carlson, PER and Connie Ferguson, Exalted Ruler.

Pizza party for readers

Pictured is Gail Schraff (Roma Gardens) along with a few of the Kindergarten students who consistently read at least 10 stories per month through our "Book-It" program and/or turned in their SFA Read and Respond bookmarks. In recognition of their efforts, Roma Gardens generously donated several large pizzas. All Kindergarten students were treated to this delicious snack Friday morning. Roma Gardens has been a gracious sponsor of this reading program for several years.

Accelerated Reader

Makieya McGuire, a student in teacher Tracy Pierson's second grade class at the Kane Elementary School, can't help smiling broadly. She recently attained Accelerated Reader 100 Club status having read and successfully tested on 100 books this school year. Makieya enjoys the Amelia Bedelia series by Herman and Peggy Parish.  Her favorite school class is physical education with teacher Rich Hunt. She also enjoys physical activity at home, especially jumping on her trampoline.

'Remembrance Flag'

Diane Ion (right) of Kane has knitted this beautiful "Remembrance Flag" to honor the memory of Staff Sgt. Kenneth VanGiesen, a Kane native killed while serving in Afghanistan last year. Ion, the soon-to-be junior vice commander at the Kane Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), presented the flag on Memorial Day to Sue and Tom VanGiesen (center), parents of the fallen soldier. Leo "Bert" Geibel (left), the VFW adjutant, helps holds the flag. Ion said it took her seven months to knit the flag as a tribute to VanGiesen.
