Works of art by Jean Swanson

The Meeting Room at Friends' Memorial Public Library has been exhibiting works of art by area residents recently. Two of the works are hand embroidery pieces, "Winter Visitors" and "Singing Friends" by Jean Swanson, a long-time Kane resident who now lives at the Lutheran Home. Jean worked for 37 years at Kane Community Hospital as the dietician while her husband Gene worked for the U.S. Postal Service and on the original Planning Committee for the creation of the Lutheran Home.

Accelerated Reader

Paige Lehman is the initial first-grade student of the 2011-2012 school year to achieve Accelerated Reader (AR) 100 Club status at the Kane Area Elementary School. This powerhouse reader is a member of teacher Julie Boyer's first grade class and teacher Paula Mosier's SFA (Success for All) reading group. While Paige certainly enjoys reading, she also loves playing tag and eating chocolate chip cookies.

The Kane Middle School Accelerated Reader contest winners for January are Emily Feikls (not pictured), Zandra Sweeney (left; seventh grade), and Katie Kimble (right; eighth grade). A total of 107 middle school students qualified for the contest.  Students must earn enough AR points to be entered into the prize drawing. Points are earned by reading novels and taking a comprehension test on the novels.

On Tuesday, January 31, 2012, Room 111 enjoyed the eruption of their volcanoes. For two weeks they constructed and designed the projects in cooperative groups. Project names included: Mt. Blue Lava, Mountain Dew, Mt. Explosion, Giant Mountain Death, The Peace Sign Lava Mountain, Mt. Rock Lava, and The Black Eye. Parents, grandparents, Dr. Anderson, and Mrs. Lorenzo joined us during the eruption. Gold Stars to the students for a fabulous job.

Accelerated Reader 100 Club

January 29, 2012

Moira Stanisch, a second grade student from teacher Pamela Karlene's class at the Kane Elementary School, has the distinction of being the first member of the prestigious Accelerated Reader (AR) 100 Club for the 2011-2012 school year. She achieved this status by reading and testing on over 100 Accelerated Reader titles with a proficiency higher than 80 percent.

The McKean County Board of Commissioners held its reorganizational meeting earlier this month in Smethport. The commissioners and their titles for the a four-year period through 2015 include, left to right: Cliff Lane, Annin Township, secretary; Joe DeMott, Port Allegany, chairman; and Al Pingie, Bradford Township, vice chairman.

Work at Family Dollar store

Despite snow, rain and cold temperatures, construction work is under way for the new Family Dollar variety store at 519 N. Fraley St. in Kane. The site is adjacent to Rite Aid and in front of Kane Manufacturing (Kane Screens). Excavation for the foundation (above) is part of the latest work for the store, which is expected to open in March or April. The Kane store is one of more than 400 scheduled to open this year for the national chain based in Charlotte. The store, which is expected to employ between 10 and 12 workers, will have 8,000 square feet of space. Hanover Land Services, Inc.

Historic research slated

Dick Bly, a representative of the Kane Historic Preservation Society (KHPS), tells the Kane School Board about a historic research project involving "Kane Summit"-- the original home of Kane founder General Thomas Kane and his wife, Elizabeth. The board agreed to partner with the society for the project on the grounds of Kane High School. Students and teachers will participate in the project.
