Jim Day addresses the Kane Lions Club

Lions International District 14F Governor Jim Day addresses the Kane Lions Club during the club's Sept. 6 meeting. Jim Day, a retired elementary school teacher from Waterford, traveled to Kane to deliver the message of 2011 Lion's International President Wing-Kun Tam. Tam's theme for the year for all Lions is "Believe." Jim challenged the Kane members to Believe in Service, Believe in Club Members, Believe in Training Officers, Believe in Projecting our Image, and Believe in Giving Back.

Materials for roofing project

Materials for the roofing project at Kane High School are stacked outside the building. The Kane School Board in June approved the roof replacement project. Most of the original roof was last replaced in 1987. Money from the capital reserve fund will cover the cost of the project.

Zandra Sweeney, daughter to Sherri and Fritz Sweeney, donated 14 inches to the 'Lock of Love' foundation. She's a 13-year-old seventh grader and got her hair cute at Just Your Style.

Conservation School students learn about wetland ecology

Heather McKean, McKean County Conservation District Watershed Conservationist presents a hands-on Wetland Ecology presentation to participants of the Potter County Junior Conservation School. Recently, the McKean County Conservation District delivered a hands-on presentation on Wetland Ecology to the students of the Potter County Junior Conservation School sponsored by the Black Forest Conservation Association. Each year, the Black Forest Conservation Association holds the Potter County Junior Conservation School to promote awareness of our environment and the principles of conservation.

Lions Club renames award after local hero

In May 2011, The Kane Lions Club established the Patriot Award for graduating Kane High Seniors who enlist in the U.S. Military. The Club felt that these young enlistees should be recognized for their upcoming service and sacrifice to America.
Tragically on July 18, Kane's SSGT Kenneth R. VanGiesen gave his life in Afghanistan, participating in Operation Enduring Freedom. In memory of this tragic loss the Lions Club decided to rename this award the SSGT Kenneth R. VanGiesen Patriot Award and to assume stewardship of this important award.

Top generals at funeral

Major General Randall Marchi (left) and Major General Wesley Craig (right) participate in the private burial Thursday for Staff Sgt. Kenneth VanGiesen of Kane at the Gibbs Hill Cemetery near Ludlow. Marchi is the commander of the 28th Infantry Division of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard. Craig as adjutant general is the head of the entire Pennsylvania National Guard. VanGiesen was killed July 18 while serving in Afghanistan with the Pennsylvania National Guard.
