Emily Bernhard, 10-year-old daughter of Laurie Carlson and Randy Bernhard of Kane, shows off a 9-inch section of her hair that she is donating the the "Locks of Love" program. Emily just completed fourth grade at the Kane Elementary School. The Headquarters Salon of Kane cut her hair for "Locks of Love," a non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children who suffer from long-term hair loss due to a medical condition.

Alumni Memorial Awards

Crystal Kocjancic (back right) presented the Kane High School Alumni Memorial Award Fund scholarships at commencement for the Class of 2011. The recipients include Stephanie Salerno (front) and Seth Habicht (left) and Aaron Severance (center). Each recipient is receiving $4,000 from the fund, which the Class of 1955 initiated in 1985. Since the inception of the fund, more than $130,000 has been awarded to Kane High graduates.

The Kane Rotary Club recently donated $1,000 towards the new playground equipment for the Kane Elementary School. This donation to the PTO brings the project much closer to completion. Members of the Class of 2011 at Kane Area High School proceed to the stage Friday for the commencement ceremony. The males wore blue caps and gowns while the females wore red. Blue and red are the school colors.

Dr. Maryann Anderson (center), superintendent of the Kane Area School District, greets Bill Ryding (right), the keynote speaker for the commencement ceremony held Friday at the high school auditorium. Ken Kane (left), president of the Kane School Board, also spoke and presented diplomas to 84 graduating seniors. The Class of 2011 selected Ryding as the speaker. He is a retired teacher in Kane.

Winners in Science Olympiad

These are the winners in the fourth-grade Science Olympiad competition held recently at the Kane Elementary School. The group includes, left to right: Patrick Detsch, egg drop; Cameron Villazon, penny barge; Honey Brown, penny barge; and Emily Bernhard, egg drop. Bernhard and Detsch won the egg drop with a height of 190 cm. Brown and Villazon won the penny barge with a total of 74 pennies.

'Math-A-Thon' aids St. Jude

These students at the Kane Elementary School each raised up to $34.99 for the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital by taking part in a "Math-A-Thon" at the school.
