Ceremony at Dover Air Force Base

A somber ceremony was held Wednesday at the Dover Air Force Base in Delaware when the body of Staff Sgt. Kenneth VanGiesen, a Kane native, was carried from a U.S. Air Force plane. Members of family of Tom and Sue VanGiesen of Kane attended the ceremony.

As a youngster, Ken VanGiesen (left) of Kane often wore a camouflage shirt and cap to dress like his father, Tom VanGiesen, a 21-year member of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard. Ken VanGiesen, who joined the National Guard after graduating from Kane Area High School in 1999, was killed Monday while serving in Afghanistan.

Coder Memorial Scholarship

Andrea Saquin (left) and Dominic Sirianni (right) are the recipients of the Charlene Weiser Coder Memorial Teaching Scholarship. The 2011 graduates of Kane Area High School received the scholarship at commencement last month. Saquin also received the Pat Santilli Memorial Teaching Award and the scholarship given by the McKean County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees (PASR).

'Locks of Love'

Kendra Farnsworth, who will be entering the fifth grade at the Kane Elementary School, holds 14 inches of her hair that was cut for the "Locks of Love" program. Kendra, 10, is the daughter of Robert Farnsworth and Stephanie Korchak of 318 1/2 Poplar St., Kane. "Locks of Love" is a non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children who suffer from long-term hair loss due to a medical condition.

The group and the scholarships not previously announced includes, left to right: Christine Mosier-- the Harold Carter Scholarship Phoenix Chapter 15 Order of Eastern Star and the Sybil Kane Nursing Award; Melia Brocious-- the Philip Imbrogno Scholarship and one of two VFW Post 1132 Ladies Auxiliary Scholarships; and Dominic Sirianni-- the Kane Area Education Association and the Parent Teachers Organization Scholarship, the Kane Players Scholarship and the David A.
