The Colonial rewards students for reading success

Pictured from right to left are Brock Wensel (kindergarten), Mitchell Morgan (1st grade), Jayna Johnson (2nd grade), Hailey Tuttle (3rd grade), Mason Zuzek (4th grade), and Braden Doughery (5th grade). Each month the Kane Elementary School is holding a prize drawing for students who complete their read and respond homework. For every week of completed read and respond homework students receive a ticket and chance to win the drawing. The drawing is sponsored by area restaurants that have generously donated certificates for each grade level winner. This month’s reward comes from the Colonial.

AR 100 Club inducts another member

Dawson Glogau, a second grade student in Mrs. Paula Mosier's class, was inducted into the prestigious AR 100 Club at Kane's elementary school recently. It is certainly understandable why he has had such reading success... he loves his SFA reading class at school. In his spare time, Dawson enjoys playing with his black lab, Abby. Dawson is the son of Heather and Rich Glogau of Kane.

These are the students-of-the-month for March at the Kane Elementary School. The honored students are holding certificates presented by the Kane Elks Lodge. The students include, left to right: 5th grade-- Kelly Eschrich; 4th grade-- Morgan Witherell; 3rd grade-- Zachary Rush; 2nd grade-- Abigail Port; 1st grade-- Raeann Raught; and kindergarten--Isabella Smith.

Latest AR 100 Achiever

Second-grader Branden Bentley is the latest student at the Kane Area Elementary School to achieve Accelerated Club 100 status. He poses with the 100th book he read and tested on, "Dogzilla" by Dav Pilkey. In an interview at the school, Branden shared that he really likes fantasy books. Although he is making great success in his reading, he loves playing with friends at recess or playing TV games, as well as eating his favorite dark chocolate cake.

Multi-phasic testing

The Kane Rotary Club and Kane Community Hospital held their joint multi-phasic testing on Saturday morning in the St Callistus Social Hall. According to a Rotary spokesperson, approximately 500 area residents took advantage of the opportunity. Ken Zook is pictured here getting his blood drawn by Caitlyn Sturdevant.

Free books for Kane students

Kane school children in kindergarten through fifth grade were able to select their own books to read and keep Friday during a "Read Across America" program at the Kane Elementary School. These second-grade students include, left to right, front row: Angel Banks, Karli Gustafson and Skylar Cook; and standing: Dale Morris, Ricky Zampogna and Branden Bentley. The National Education Association (NEA) promotes the "Read Across America" program each year on the birthday of "Dr. Seuss," the famous author of children's books. Today marks the 109th birthday of "Dr. Seuss."

Kane students donate blood

The Student Council at Kane Area High School sponsored a Blood Drive this week at the school. More than 40 students and staff donated blood. Taking part in the program are Mark Zielewski (left), a donor collection specialist for the Community Blood Bank; and Melissa Lindsay (right), a Kane High School junior who donated blood. 

A community that gives helps kids

February 28, 2013

Thanks to our community, 78 students in third, fourth, and fifth grade at Chestnut Street Elementary raised $5,272 for the children at St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital by participating in the St. Jude’s Math-a-thon. In a two-week period, students get sponsors, go online or complete a booklet with over 200 math problems, and collect money from their sponsors.
