The Kane Rotary Club recently donated $1,000 towards the new playground equipment for the Kane Elementary School. This donation to the PTO brings the project much closer to completion. Members of the Class of 2011 at Kane Area High School proceed to the stage Friday for the commencement ceremony. The males wore blue caps and gowns while the females wore red. Blue and red are the school colors.

Dr. Maryann Anderson (center), superintendent of the Kane Area School District, greets Bill Ryding (right), the keynote speaker for the commencement ceremony held Friday at the high school auditorium. Ken Kane (left), president of the Kane School Board, also spoke and presented diplomas to 84 graduating seniors. The Class of 2011 selected Ryding as the speaker. He is a retired teacher in Kane.

Winners in Science Olympiad

These are the winners in the fourth-grade Science Olympiad competition held recently at the Kane Elementary School. The group includes, left to right: Patrick Detsch, egg drop; Cameron Villazon, penny barge; Honey Brown, penny barge; and Emily Bernhard, egg drop. Bernhard and Detsch won the egg drop with a height of 190 cm. Brown and Villazon won the penny barge with a total of 74 pennies.

'Math-A-Thon' aids St. Jude

These students at the Kane Elementary School each raised up to $34.99 for the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital by taking part in a "Math-A-Thon" at the school. Fifth-grader Levi Fry has established the record at the Kane Elementary School for the most points achieved in one year through the Accelerated Reader Program. He earned 408.9 points and read an incredible 2,784,801 words. His reading teacher Betsy Zeigler and his parents can certainly be pleased with his successful reading passion.

Second-grader Izaiah Griffin is excited to see his name on the Accelerated Reader Wall of Fame after achieving AR 100 Club status at the Kane Elementary School. Currently he really enjoys "Army" or "Military" titles. When he isn't reading, Izaiah's favorite activity is playing outdoor games, although he does enjoy Mario on the computer.

Kane Elementary School students in the Learning Support, Emotional Support and Life Skills Support classes attended an awards picnic recently in Evergreen Park. Ron Housler cooked hot dogs for the students,and teachers and aides brought various other treats. Each student was recognized for an achievement earned during the school year and given a certificate. New Accelerated Reader 100 Club member, Jessica Buhl, smiles broadly with her favorite stories about the character, Biscuit. She particularly likes math at the Kane Elementary School. At home, Jessica enjoys jumping on her trampoline and eating pizza.  Jessica is the daughter of Meredith and Jeff Buhl of Kane and a student in in teacher Paula Mosier's room at the school.
