Lilly Buzard shows off one of her favorite books she tested on in the Accelerated Reader (AR) Program the day she garnered AR 100 Club status at the Kane Elementary School. Listing several titles as her "favorites." it is evident that reading is her No. 1 school subject.  Lilly rounds out her activity time eating pizza and playing Super Mario on her Wii.

First-grader Harley Morris has qualified to join the Accelerated Reader (AR) 100 Club at the Kane Elementary School. He reached his goal by reading many books, including those on his favorite subject-- dirt bikes-- and those on his favorite character "Little Critter."

Alex Ognen has qualified to become a member of the Accelerated Reader (AR) 100 Club at the Kane Elementary School. His favorite books are from the "Henry and Mudge" series. Currently, his favorites include math, football, pizza and wings. His teacher is Julie Wismar.

The Kane Elks Lodge sponsors the student-of-the-month program and recently held a Pizza/Bowling Party to honor the students-of-the-month for the second semester of the school year.

Second-grader Sawyer Snyder recently achieved membership in the Accelerated Reader (AR) 100 Club at the Kane Elementary School. His love of "action" titles made it easy to accomplish his goal. When at home, he enjoys playing video games and playing with his brother and sister, as well as friends.

Local hero honored

PFC William Englehart, Korean War P.O.W. was captured and held by the Chinese at Imjin River P.O.W. camp from 1950 to 1953. Fifty-seven years after his release, PFC Englehart was honored and thanked at a Veteran’s Day program held in November 2010 at the First United Methodist Church in Kane.
An American flag that was donated by Congressman Glenn Thompson and flown over the Nation’s Capital in Mr. Englehart’s honor was presented to this brave US Army hero by an honor guard from Kane’s PA National Guard 128th Brigade Support Battalion.

Carson Whiteman sports an honorary balloon bouquet in front of the Accelerated Reader Wall of Fame at the Kane Elementary School. He recently set the school record for the most books read and tested on in the Accelerated Reader Program in one year. Amazingly, Carson took 509 quizzes on various titles and read 414,892 words. Carson is the son of proud parents, Mr. and Mrs. Steve Whiteman of Kane.

Longtime Kane teacher to retire

Betsey Davis (left), who has been a learning support teacher at the Kane Middle School for 34 years, is retiring at the end of the current school year. Some of her students include, left to right: Cassie Ginkel, eighth-grade; Desirae Hulings, eighth-grade; and Dale Coates, seventh-grade. A Pittsburgh native, Davis and her husband, Dennis reside in Kane. They have a son, Matthew. Davis came to Kane for her first teaching job in 1977-78 after graduating from Mansfield State University. She has been in Room 139 at the Kane Middle School during her entire career as a special education teacher.

First-grader Max Bizzak is the 45th and latest member of Kane Elementary School's Accelerated Reader Club. Max claims his favorite books are those about dinosaurs. At school, he loves gym with physical education teacher Rich Hunt. Playing Wii games and eating pizza are favorite things he likes to do at home. This super reader is the son of Lisa and Max Bizzak of Kane.

The Kane Area High School Marching Band plays Monday in the annual Memorial Day parade in Kane. The band also played patriotic songs at the Memorial Day program at Evergreen Park.
