The Memorial Day program in Kane featured the placing of memorial wreaths in the memorial section of Evergreen Park. Placing the wreaths are Russ Counts (left), commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 1132 in Kane; and Jim Gibson (right), representing American Legion Post 250 of Kane.

Beth Carpenter of Mt. Jewett follows a Memorial Day tradition and plants flowers at the graves of her maternal grandparents-- Henry and Sophie Detrick-- at the St. Callistus Catholic Cemetery in Kane. Carpenter's mother is Kathryn Detrick Fleeger of Kane. Many Kane area families are visiting cemeteries this weekend to plant flowers at graves of loved ones.

Local second-graders are achieving reading milestones in the Accelerated Reader (AR) program at the Kane Elementary School Cole Good, a student in teacher Pam Karlene's class, has successfully read enough titles to acquire AR 100 Club Status. Currently, he especially likes dinosaur books. Other favorite things include gym class, board games and pizza.

Girl Scout Troop 23093 collected over 100 items for the food pantry in preparation for the Girl Scouts 100th anniversary next year.  They also cleaned Evergreen Park for over 100 minutes. The girls plan on doing more things in the future to prepare for the 100th anniversary celebration. Parker Causer, a first-grader in teacher Julie Boyer's room, beams as he poses for Accelerated Reader (AR) 100 Club recognition outside his classroom at the Kane Elementary School. Currently, he really likes frog books. Parker also enjoys gym, library visits and classroom "energizers." He frequently watches "I Carly" and "Spongebob" and fills up on his favorite food -- pizza.

The Kane High School Band performed Tuesday evening at the Spring Concert at the school auditorium. This group of band members includes, left to right, seated: Dan Hanson, trumpet; Will Keesler, trumpet; Mitch Kumher, alto saxophone; and Melia Brocious, flute; standing: Dominic Sirianni, soprano saxophone; Joe Thornburg, band director; and Joe Hanson, baritone saxophone. All students in the group are seniors who performed in their final concert.

Ed Fisher of Mt. Jewett is shown with the gobbler he shot earlier this month while hunting in Hamlin Township. The turkey weighed 20 pounds. The gobbler has a 7-inch beard and 3/4-inch spurs.
